For the 20th anniversary of the VW subsidiary in California, the German carmaker has shown the legendary Type 2 T1 as an electric minibus. The VW Type 20 is just a concept.

Type 20 is an electric minibus based on the iconic Volkswagen Type 2 T1 that in the 1960s has been a worldwide favorite. The design is extraordinarily similar to that of the iconic German manufacturer's minibus, although some slight restyling has been made to make it more current.

The real news is inside. The beating heart of Type 20 is an electric motor capable of delivering 120 hp. The battery pack has a capacity of just 10 kWh. In addition, there is a 2,5k-watt charger on board.

VW has incorporated a whole series of smart functions into the Type 20.

Volkswagen has integrated a facial recognition system based on a 720p camera and NVIDIA Jetson TX2 processor, which recognizes users and unlocks the vehicle lock.

There is also a voice assistant that allows occupants to perform some operations using simple voice commands. This electric mini bus also features other refinements such as a software-controlled air suspension system developed by Porsche. The height of the vehicle from the ground can be lowered, for example, upon arrival of the driver to facilitate boarding.  A holographic display should provide the driver with 3D information.

While the Type 20 will probably not go into production, VW bus fans can look forward to the ID Buzz. This electric bus, reminiscent at least remotely to the T1 Bulli, should come in 2022 on the market. The VW ID Buzz will provide space for 8 people and 600 kilometers range. Thanks to the integration of laser scanners, ultrasonic sensors, radar sensors, area view cameras, front camera and other technical refinements, the E-Bus is prepared for autonomous driving.
