On December 14, the Chinese government's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released information and photos of the new NIO ES8 electric SUV. This huge electric SUV, introduced in 2018, will receive its first significant update.

Even though the new NIO ES8 is touted as a restyling of the current model, the alterations implemented are significant. At first sight, this is obvious, as the front incorporates the company's new visual identity. There are also significant changes on the side (the window line is now entirely straight) and at the back (carried out by some fine pilots joined together).

This update will also affect the vehicle's measurements, which will increase in length (from 5,022 to 5,099 millimeters), width (from 1,962 to 1,989 millimeters), and even wheelbase (from 3,010 meters to 3,070 millimeters). Furthermore, it will be somewhat lower (from 1,756 to 1,750 millimeters). All of this leads us to believe it is a new generation rather than a makeover.

This perception is bolstered by the fact that it will use the new NT2.0 platform, which has already been seen in NIO ET5NIO ET7, and ES7/EL7. The NIO ES8 will, like the others, include a LiDAR on the roof (just like Volvo EX90), which, along with the high-definition cameras on the sides, will make it compatible with the NAD (NIO Autonomous Driving) semi-autonomous driving system.

In contrast to the present NIO ES8, which has seven seats, the next model will only have 6. It will also be 100kg heavier and have three wheel sizes: 20, 21, and 22 inches. It will be able to tow up to 2,000 kg due to the availability of an optional electric tow bar.

The NIO ES8 electric SUV will be powered by two electric motors with a combined output of 653 horsepower (480 kW). It will be all-wheel drive and capable of reaching a top speed of 200 km/h. The batteries will be available in two packs, one with 75 kWh and the other with 100 kWh of NCM cells (nickel, cobalt, manganese).

The refreshed NIO ES8 and the family version of the NIO ET5 electric car will be unveiled on December 24 during NIO Day.

The first deliveries will take place in the first half of 2023.
