Alfa Romeo is a brand that has always been synonymous with passion, performance, and style. But in recent years, it has also faced some challenges in terms of sales, competition, and innovation. That’s why the Italian automaker is gearing up for a major transformation that will see it embrace electrification and launch a range of new models that will appeal to both its loyal fans and new customers.

One of the most anticipated products from Alfa Romeo is an electric SUV that will rival the likes of the BMW iX, Mercedes-Benz EQS, and Audi Q8 e-tron. The SUV, which is expected to debut in 2028, will be based on the STLA Large platform from parent company Stellantis, which also owns brands such as Fiat, Peugeot, and Jeep. The platform will allow Alfa Romeo to offer a spacious and versatile vehicle that can accommodate up to seven passengers and offer a range of over 400 miles on a single charge.

The electric SUV will also benefit from an 800-volt charging system enabling fast charging times and reducing battery degradation. Moreover, the SUV will feature Alfa Romeo’s signature design language, which combines muscular proportions, sculpted lines, and dynamic details. The SUV will also inherit some elements from the Alfa Romeo Tonale concept that was unveiled in 2019, such as the distinctive front grille, the LED headlights, and the rear spoiler.

But before the SUV arrives, Alfa Romeo will introduce its first purely electric model in 2024: a large saloon car targeting both North American and European markets. The saloon car will also use the STLA Large platform and will offer a range of around 435 miles. Another electric model will follow the saloon car in 2025: a high-performance version of the Giulia sedan that will boast over 1,000 horsepower and a 0-60 mph time of less than three seconds.

These electric models are part of Alfa Romeo’s strategy to become a fully electric brand by 2027, as announced by CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato earlier this year. Imparato said that electrification would be at the service of Alfa Romeo’s DNA, which means that the brand will not compromise on its core values of driving pleasure, emotion, and beauty. He also said that Alfa Romeo aims to increase its sales outside of Europe to around 40 percent by 2030 by offering products that meet the needs and preferences of different markets.

Alfa Romeo’s electric ambitions are not only driven by environmental concerns but also by competitive pressures. The brand faces stiff competition from German rivals such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi, which have already launched or announced several electric models in various segments. Alfa Romeo also needs to catch up with other premium brands, such as Volvo, Jaguar, and Tesla, which have also made significant strides in electrification.

Alfa Romeo hopes to regain its relevance and reputation in the global automotive scene by launching an electric SUV that can challenge the German giants. The brand also hopes to attract new customers looking for a premium, eco-friendly vehicle that offers both practicality and performance. And most importantly, Alfa Romeo hopes to stay true to its heritage and spirit, which have made it one of the most iconic and beloved brands in history.
