Ford confirmed that it will invest 249 million euros to build a new light commercial vehicle in 2023, at its plant in Craiova (Romania), including a fully electric version of it, which will debut in 2024.

With an investment of 249 million euros, Craiova would be the third Ford location in Europe where fully electric vehicles are produced. The investment in Craiova comes in the context of the other investments already announced for the Cologne plant in Germany and the Kocaeli plant in Turkey.

Ford is currently building the two small SUV models in Craiova, Romania: Ford Puma and Ford EcoSport.

According to Ford, the exact start date for production and further product details will be announced at a later date.

Since 2008, Ford says it has invested almost two billion dollars in the Craiova plant. Around 6,000 people are currently employed there, and an electrified vehicle, the Puma Mild Hybrid, has also been built there since 2019. According to Ford, the e-commercial vehicle will also be the first fully electric car from the Romanian plant.

Ford wants to make all commercial vehicle series available as fully electric versions by 2024. By 2030, two-thirds of Ford's commercial vehicle sales are expected to be represented by all-electric or plug-in hybrid models.

The factory in Craiova thus follows the Ford Electrified Vehicle Center in Cologne (Germany) and the Ford Otosan plant in Kocaeli (Turkey), which will also produce fully electric vehicles.
