The Gloucestershire police force now has 75 electric vehicles in use - 66 Nissan Leaf and nine e-NV200. This is Britain's largest electric police fleet which is now operating in Gloucestershire in south-west England.

With the new 75 electric cars, 21 per cent of Gloucestershire's entire fleet is electric. The police hope that the cheaper operation of e-vehicles will save them fuel costs and maintenance of £ 136,000 a year - and thus wants to finance the acquisition of additional e-vehicles. The e-share of the fleet is expected to increase to 40 per cent in the next four years.

At least that's what Commissioner Martin Surl says. "The new fleet will save a considerable amount of Co2 and money, giving Gloucestershire a larger percentage of fully-electric vehicles in its fleet than any other force." The police in Gloustershire had already tested a smaller fleet of Leafs in 2016 and 2017.

Tim Anderson, head of transport at Energy Saving Trust, said: "Gloucestershire Constabulary is the first force to achieve the milestone of a 21 per cent fully-electric fleet. This is a great achievement and an important example, leading the way for other forces, proving that even in fleets requiring a high level of operational resilience, electric vehicles can work. Energy Saving Trust has supported several police forces on their journey towards electrification and can provide a funded fleet review to organisations to assist with the business case for electric vehicles."

The Nissan LEAF e+ and e-NV200 are charged overnight at wall boxes with 7 kW.  The Nissan LEAF e+ is able to travel up to 239 miles on a single charge, while the e-NV200 is able of up to 187 miles.

Nissan Motor GB Fleet Director Peter McDonald said: “We are really excited to be working with progressive organisations in their pursuit of net zero. We are working with a number of organisations piloting major initiatives in the corporate and public sector space, and are really excited to announce this partnership with the Gloucester Police Force.

“Through their pioneering work Gloucestershire are showing how EVs can be used in all kinds of practical applications, and how with some initiative blue light fleets are able to play an active role in decarbonisation. We applaud Gloucester Police Forces and are proud to be working with them.”
