The most crucial things to ask when purchasing an e-bike are:

How much does a good e-bike cost?

The cost of an e-bike varies greatly. There are discounts of 500 euros, while high-end equipment may sell for up to 10,000 euros. However, on average, pedelecs cost between 2,000 and 3,000 euros, and there are great bikes in this price range, particularly for novices.

Experienced riders should budget between 3,000 and 4,000 euros for their electric bike, whether a city e-bike or an e-trekking cycle.

The price range for electric mountain bikes is also growing, but riders' preferences are crucial. For example, should it be a hardtail or a fully-equipped bike? What components should be installed? If you want to buy a high-end e-bike, you need to have between 6,000 and 8,000 euros in your bank account.

Why is an electric bike so pricey?

Many aspects come into play, the drive and the engine being most important. Both are pretty complicated, and the makers require numerous parts that are not accessible on a standard bicycle. Furthermore, they take longer to make and sometimes necessitate the construction of new manufacturing facilities, which impacts the price. Finally, many new goods are being produced because this is a new market. This results in expensive development expenses, which producers pass to the buyer.

Batteries are costly since they require limited raw resources like lithium, which is highly expensive on the global market.

What are the advantages of low-cost e-bikes?

When it comes to inexpensive e-bikes, you always have to cut shortcuts. First, you must determine whether or not you are prepared for this. Rim brakes, for example, are less expensive than disc brakes, but disc brakes provide higher braking performance. A less powerful engine is likewise less costly, although it struggles on inclines. Cheap e-bikes are thus not inherently poor; their components are usable, although mainly just for short daily excursions in flat terrain. However, if you want something of excellent quality or for longer hikes and inclines, you'll have to dig further into your wallet.

When do e-bikes have the lowest price?

E-bikes become less expensive at the end of the season as manufacturers clean out their warehouses to make place for their new products. As a result, deals may be found throughout late fall and winter. Even vintage electric motorcycles are still helpful, especially when technology does not advance significantly in a year. If you buy in the winter, the main negative is that you will likely have to leave your e-bike standing due to the cold.

What is the ideal number of watt-hours for an e-bike battery?

However, that depends on the individual's utilization of the e-bike. If you want to use the electric bicycle mainly in the city, 300 Wh should be enough. A battery capacity of 400 to 500 Wh is recommended for medium-length journeys. Batteries with 500 Wh are sufficient for long trips, especially in rough terrain. Finally, it would be best if you considered your unique driving style. If you drive more aggressively, you will use more gas. The current norm is 500 watt-hours, with an even bigger capacity. As a result, 625 Wh batteries are increasingly being integrated into e-bikes.

Which of these e-bikes is the lightest?

A German engineer from Freiburg created the world's lightest e-bike, which, at 6.872 kg, even made it into the Guinness Book of Records. This, on the other hand, is a one-of-a-kind object. At the same time, the lightest e-bikes on the market weigh roughly 15kg. On the other hand, standard electric motorcycles typically weigh between 20 and 25 kg.

How much does it cost to maintain an e-bike?

The e-bike's battery must be charged regularly. If we assume a typical battery with 500 Wh and an average power price of 30 cents per kWh in 2020, we will be charged 15 cents for a full charge. The monthly costs are determined by how frequently you ride the electric motorcycle and how much you use the battery. After 1,000 loads, the prices would have been roughly 150 euros. That is a manageable problem. It becomes more expensive if the battery has to be changed because its remaining capacity only permits short distances. Prices range from 250 to 650 euros in this area.

Which e-bike motor is the best?

For e-bike motors, there are two critical characteristics to consider. On the one hand, there is the maximum output: is 250 watts for practically all e-bikes; the electric motors are artificially limited to this figure. Because in Europe, they are only permitted to assist the driver up to 25 km/h before switching off automatically. In principle, you would be able to summon more power.

Torque is the other more essential value. In layman's words, this is the additional force with which the motor sustains you in addition to its strength. Torque is measured in Newton-meters and is typically between 50 and 85 Nm. The greater the number of Newton meters, the faster you can accelerate and the more straightforward it is to conquer hills.

However, it cannot be assumed that the most powerful engines are also the best. On the one hand, they use more electricity; on the other hand, it is dependent on personal preferences. For example, a person who wants to drive pleasantly through the city does not require the maximum power available on the market.
