Starting in early 2023, Hyundai will offer the Ioniq 6, an electric sports sedan in the coupe body style. The Ioniq 6 was inspired by the Hyundai Prophecy concept EV. Hyundai's Ioniq 5 was the debut vehicle for its new electric sub-brand, but the styling of the Ioniq 6 sports sedan is entirely different. Here, creative director Sang Yup Lee consciously goes against tradition by not giving the classic brand face.
The closed front features nearly square LED headlights and a hood that curves sharply forward. The apron is equipped with active air flaps for better aerodynamics. The back end of the roof, in coupé fashion, stretches far backward. Therefore, the band of windows along the side of the vehicle narrows toward the back. The lower window line also describes an arc reminiscent of the CLA or CLS from Mercedes. The door handles are flush with the body, and the exterior mirror cameras protrude from the window triangle on a solid support. 20-inch light-alloy rims with 245/40 tires rotate in the only slightly flared wheel arches – the basic version has 18-inch wheels with 225/55 tires.
The rear – reminiscent of the Porsche 911 or the Porsche Taycan – stretches far down, and strong shoulders give the model width. In addition to a spoiler below the rear window with third brake light, there is another spoiler lip and little LED lights that stretch across the entire vehicle width. Finally, a diffuser marks the conclusion, with two lights set at right angles. The Hyundai Ioniq 6 is available in a total of twelve different colors.
Hyundai did not successfully transfer the sleek and intricate styling of the Prophecy concept into production. Extremely little of the production model's sporty, elegant lines remain, and the front end is significantly higher. More oversized windows and a less stooped roof mean more headroom for passengers. The back end is not as crucial to the overall aesthetic as it was in the study. The Koreans aimed for a drag coefficient of 0.20 or less with this design; they achieved 0.21. The Mercedes EQS, the current most aerodynamic model, has a drag coefficient of 0.20, while the Mercedes CLA and the Tesla Model 3 both have drag coefficients of 0.22.
Its design is based on that of the Hyundai Ioniq 5. The "Electric Global Modular Platform" (or "E-GMP" for short) used by Ioniq 6 is suitable for the plug-in hybrid, hydrogen, or pure battery drives. As with the modular electrical construction kit (MEB) from Volkswagen, the batteries are housed on the vehicle floor and have different capacities. Since the Ioniq 6 has a wheelbase of almost three meters, more battery units can be accommodated between the axles.
The range, which is 650 to 700 kilometers, increases accordingly. The Ioniq 5 has two battery packs with 58 and 77.4 kWh capacity and two drive layouts. Rear-wheel drive with an electric motor and 160 kW (218 hp) and four-wheel drive with two electric motors (230 kW / 313 hp), one per axle. The Ioniq 6 with a large battery is based on the drive layout of the Kia EV6. It comes with a rear-wheel drive to 229 hp and an EV6 GT to 585 hp all-wheel-drive. Standard charging is handled by Rimac's 800 V DC fast-charging system.
The camera mirror displays are located at the ends of the wing-shaped dashboard inside the Ioniq 6. The driver grabs a flat-bottomed two-spoke steering wheel with pixel light and looks at a digital cockpit. Another touchscreen controls the 12-inch infotainment system that sits in the middle. The lower level houses the HVAC command center, among other utilities. As crucial as the Ioniq 6's networked assistance and comfort systems are, their connectivity is just as vital. The driver and front passenger are separated by a slim center console. You can choose between sports and comfort seats, both of which have been ergonomically shaped. Additionally, Hyundai provides alternate color temperatures for the front and rear seats.
The Ioniq 6 launch was indeed delayed. The production was scheduled for the beginning of 2022, but Hyundai still felt the need to take some design and technological action just before that. The "Korean Economic Daily" reports that the electric sedan's headlights and front and rear bumpers have been redesigned. A temporary shutdown of the Asan plant due to the conversion was also cited as a cause of the delay.
Chief designer SangYup Lee sees other versions of the Ioniq 6. According to British media reports, the design director thinks the Hyundai Ioniq 6 would make a great shooting brake. Genesis, a sister company, has already moved forward with the GV70 Shooting Brake for the European market. Lee also is hesitant to rule out the possibility of a sizzling N version. The Kia EV6 GT's transmission and motor combo would work wonderfully. We have a working prototype of the Ioniq 5 N, for which it was designed.
In 2023, Hyundai will introduce the Ioniq 6, an electric sports sedan, as part of its "Ioniq" electric brand. The study version of the Ioniq 5 caused a commotion, and the series' angular design was preserved. The Prophecy study doesn't manage that, which was significantly toned down for the series, but still has an excellent drag coefficient at the start. It is a pity that Hyundai does not give any technical data when presenting the model.
