Irish Post is planning to buy 750 electric vehicles by 2022, of which 200 will hit the streets later this year. In addition to delivery vans, pedelecs (pedal electric cycle) are also on the shopping list.

The background to this is that Ireland's state-owned postal company plans to completely switch deliveries in the capital city of Dublin to electric vehicles by the end of 2019. By the end of 2020, postal deliveries will also be electrified in Cork, Galway, Kilkenny, Limerick, and Waterford.

Communications, climate action and environment minister Richard Bruton said:

"It is vital that every aspect of our society seek ways to reduce their carbon impact and the public service and our semi-state bodies must be the first to show that it takes policies for sustainability seriously, if we are to persuade the rest of society to make the step changes which we need to make.”

"An Post is transforming for generations to come: as a major employer with a huge fleet footprint, this demands responsible climate action with this commitment to carbon-free delivery.”
