Nissan has confirmed that it will launch an electric version of its popular Juke crossover in the second half of the decade, to match the price of the current petrol model. The electric Juke will also feature a bold design inspired by the Hyper Punk concept, which was unveiled at the Japan Mobility Show in October.

Nissan Juke EV to use CMF-EV platform

The electric Juke will be based on the CMF-EV platform, a dedicated electric architecture developed by the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance for C- and D-segment vehicles. The platform will also underpin the electric versions of the Qashqai and the Leaf, built at Nissan’s Sunderland plant in the UK.

The CMF-EV platform allows for various battery sizes and power outputs, as well as different wheelbases and suspension setups. Nissan has not revealed the technical specifications of the electric Juke, but it is expected to offer a competitive range and performance compared to other electric crossovers in the market.

The Nissan Juke electric car will also benefit from Nissan’s e-Power system, which uses a small petrol engine as a generator to charge the battery and extend the range. The e-Power system is already available on the Qashqai and the Note in some markets, and Nissan claims it offers the driving feel of an electric car with the convenience of a hybrid.

Nissan Juke EV to cost around $28,000

One of the main challenges for Nissan is to make the electric Juke affordable and accessible for customers. The current petrol-powered Juke starts from around £21,000 ($28,000) in the UK, and Nissan is aiming to match that price with the electric version.

However, Nissan admits that this is not an easy task, given the higher costs of batteries and electric components. The company is relying on economies of scale, technological advancements, and government incentives to achieve its price target.

Nissan is also investing up to £1.19 billion ($1.58 billion) in its Sunderland plant to design, engineer, and build the next-generation electric Juke, Qashqai, and Leaf. The investment will create and sustain thousands of jobs in the UK, as well as support the wider supply chain and dealership network.

Nissan Juke EV to adopt Hyper Punk design

The electric Juke will also feature a distinctive design that reflects its innovative and expressive character. The Nissan Hyper Punk concept will influence the design, which was showcased at the Japan Mobility Show as a preview of Nissan’s future electric cars.

The Nissan Hyper Punk concept is a compact electric crossover tailored for content creators, influencers, artists, and those who embrace style and innovation. It offers seamless connections between the virtual and physical worlds and the inside and outside of the car.

The concept has a multifaceted and polygonal exterior that changes its appearance depending on the viewing angle and light source. The interior blends Japanese aesthetics with technology, using origami-styled elements and a three-screen display that can project manga-style scenery or graphic patterns based on the driver’s preferences.

The concept also functions as a mobile creative studio, with seamless internet connectivity and the ability to link to the occupants’ devices and equipment. The concept can also detect the driver’s mood and adjust the music and lighting accordingly, using AI and headrest biosensors.

The electric Nissan Juke will not be a replica of the Nissan Hyper Punk concept, but it will incorporate some of its elements and themes. The electric Juke will also retain some of the signature features of the current model, such as the round headlights, the V-shaped grille, and the coupe-like roofline.

Nissan Juke EV to launch in 2025

Nissan has given a more specific timeline for the launch of the electric Juke, saying that it will arrive in 2025, following the normal product cycle of the current model, which was introduced in 2019. The launch date will also depend on the market demand and the pace of transition to electric vehicles in different regions.

The electric Juke will be part of Nissan’s electrification strategy, aiming to elect 50% of its global sales by 2030. The company is also developing various other electric models, such as the Nissan Ariya SUV, the Micra hatchback, and the Z sports car.

The electric Juke will compete with other electric crossovers in the segment, such as the Hyundai Kona Electric, the Kia Soul EV, the Peugeot e-2008, and the Volkswagen ID.3. The electric Juke will offer a unique combination of affordability, performance, and style, as well as the option of the e-Power system for extra range and convenience.

The electric Juke will also appeal to customers who value self-expression, creativity, environmental responsibility, and innovation. The electric Juke will be inspired by the Hyper Punk concept, which represents Nissan’s vision of the future of mobility and lifestyle.
