The rumble of commerce in the UK isn't just symbolic these days. It's also the sound of a resurgent Stellantis, the automotive giant formed by the 2016 merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Groupe PSA, absolutely dominating the nation's van market.
According to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), Stellantis owns a whopping 31.24% share of the UK van market year-to-date, a clear sign that their commercial vehicle strategy is firing on all cylinders. This isn't just a flash in the pan, either. Stellantis has seen a sales increase of a healthy 10.9% compared to the same period last year, even as the overall market itself has grown.
What's behind Stellantis's success? It's a potent cocktail of factors, but chief among them is a two-pronged attack: offering a diverse range of traditional vans and leading the charge in electric light commercial vehicles (e-LCVs).
Vauxhall's Staying Power and Berlingo's Brilliance
Brits clearly have a taste for Stellantis vans. Vauxhall, a Stellantis brand with a long and storied history in the UK, secured the number three spot for best-selling van brand, both in March and year-to-date. This loyalty also extends to smaller vans, with the Citroen Berlingo reigning supreme as the UK's favorite compact workhorse.
Electrifying the Market: Stellantis Charges Ahead
But perhaps the most significant aspect of Stellantis's performance lies in the electric realm. The company completely dominated the e-LCV market in March, capturing a staggering 50.91% share. Year-to-date, they haven't relinquished their grip, boasting a market share of 44.82%.
There's a clear brand champion within Stellantis's electric van lineup as well. Peugeot has emerged as the UK's go-to manufacturer for electric vans, with their Peugeot e-Expert model taking the coveted title of best-selling electric van overall. This isn't just a one-month blip, either. Peugeot has more than doubled its share of the e-LCV market since February, a testament to the growing consumer appetite for electric options.
Stellantis: The One-Stop Shop for UK Businesses
Lee Titchner, Director of Stellantis ProOne UK, attributes their success to a winning combination: "These latest sales figures underline the strength of our commercial vehicle offering." He emphasizes the importance of both traditional and electric choices: "Stellantis also continues to lead the way in the electric van market, with all four brands offering an electric version across every model in their line-up."
This comprehensive approach gives UK businesses a compelling reason to choose Stellantis. They offer a van for every need, from the reliable workhorse of the Vauxhall brand to the cutting-edge efficiency of the PEUGEOT E-EXPERT. As Titchner himself says, "With our recently updated van range now open for orders, I look forward to continuing this positive start to 2024 and helping more British businesses realize the benefits of switching to electric."
Looking Ahead: Continued Growth and a Greener Future
Stellantis's dominance in the UK van market shows no signs of abating. Their commitment to offering a diverse range of vans, coupled with their leadership in the e-LCV segment, positions them perfectly to capitalize on the ongoing shift towards electric commercial vehicles. As businesses become increasingly environmentally conscious and the UK government implements stricter emission regulations, Stellantis is well-positioned to be the driving force behind a cleaner, more efficient future for British commerce.
