Ford Performance is launching a truly unique all-electric drag racer: Ford Mustang Cobra Jet with more than 1400 hp and a top speed of more than 270 km / h. Mustang Cobra Jet electric car delivers a torque of almost 1500 Nm.
Ford has always used motorsport to showcase and develop new innovations. The Cobra Jet 1400 electric car is an example of how to get the most out of new technology. The Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 is a tribute to the original Cobra Jet which dominated the drag racing sport in the late '60s and which is still to be awaited.
After the Mustang Mach-E electric SUV, with a range of up to 600 km, made its world debut in November last year, the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 represents a completely different way to preserve the heritage and further develop the Mustang family.
The car will make its world debut on track later this year and is now being tested to see what it is capable of performing on the drag racing track. Ford Performance collaborates with several specialists in the field. These include MLe Racecars (Vehicle builder, designer, integrator and tuner), Watson Engineering (Chassis support and development, roll cage builder), AEM EV (Software and motor calibration and controls) and Cascadia (Inverter and Motor supplier).
The electric car is capable of driving a drag distance of 402 m in less than 8 s, and the exit speed is 170 mph (275 km) per hour.
Full performance cars have not yet been disclosed. Whether the dragster will be launched at least in small-scale production or whether it will remain at the prototype level is not yet known. However, Ford's desire to take a large share in the electric car market is quite obvious.
Mark Rushbrook, Global Director, Ford Performance Motorsports:
"We saw the Cobra Jet 1400 project as an opportunity to start developing electric powertrains in a race car package that we already had a lot of experience with, so we had performance benchmarks we wanted to match and beat right now. This has been a fantastic project to work on, and we hope the first of many coming from our team at Ford Performance Motorsports."
The Cobra Jet 1400 is not the company's first electric sports car. Last fall, Ford showed off the Mustang Lithium concept car. It was equipped with a 900hp propulsion system, an 800-volt battery and - uncharacteristic of American sports cars - a manual gearbox.
