The Mitsubishi Colt, a nameplate that has been around since 1962, has just landed in the Spanish market after a long absence. The new Colt is not a completely original model but a rebadged version of the Renault Clio, one of the best-selling cars in Europe. The Colt shares the same platform, engines, and most of the design features with the Clio, but it also has some distinctive elements that make it a Mitsubishi product. A familiar design with some tweaks
The new Mitsubishi Colt is based on the recently facelifted Renault Clio, launched in 2019 and updated in 2021. The Colt has the same dimensions as the Clio, measuring 4.05 meters long, 1.73 meters wide, and 1.44 meters high, with a wheelbase of 2.58 meters. The trunk capacity is also identical, at 391 liters, which can be expanded to 1,069 liters by folding the rear seats.
The Colt’s exterior design is very similar to the Clio’s, but it has some minor changes to the grille, bumpers, and lights to give it a more Mitsubishi-like appearance. The Colt has a more prominent front grille with a chrome frame and a large Mitsubishi logo in the center. The headlights are slightly different, with a sharper shape and LED technology. The front bumper has a lower air intake and two fog lights on the sides. The side profile is almost identical to the Clio’s, except for the Colt’s logo on the front fenders and the different alloy wheels. The next option is a turbocharged 1.0-liter, three-cylinder engine that delivers 90 horsepower and 160 Newton-meters of torque. This engine can be coupled with either a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The fuel consumption of this engine is 4.8 liters per 100 kilometers, and the CO2 emissions are 109 grams per kilometer with the manual gearbox, 5.1 liters per 100 kilometers, and 116 grams per kilometer with the automatic gearbox.
The top-of-the-range option is a hybrid system that combines a naturally aspirated 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine with an electric motor and a 1.2-kWh battery pack. The total output of this system is 141 horsepower and 253 Newton-meters of torque. The hybrid system is mated to an automatic transmission and has a fuel consumption of 3.6 liters per 100 kilometers and CO2 emissions of 82 grams per kilometer. The hybrid system also has a brake energy recovery function and can run on electric mode for short distances.
