Renault has revived its iconic 5 hatchback as an all-electric car that combines retro charm with modern technology. The Renault 5 E-Tech is expected to hit the European roads in early 2025, with a starting price of around $30,000. It will offer two battery options, two power outputs, and a range of up to 248 miles. But what makes this car stand out from the crowd is its personality. The Renault 5 E-Tech has winking headlights, a virtual assistant named Reno, and 3D-printed accessories that let you customize its interior.
A Nod to the Past
The Renault 5 E-Tech is based on a concept car that was unveiled in 2021, which itself borrowed styling elements from the original Renault 5 that sold more than 5.5 million units between 1972 and 1985. The new car retains the squat, aggressive look of the former Turbo models, with large wheels, short overhangs, and angular lines. It also features some nostalgic details, such as the hood air intake, the side vents, and the logo on the front grille. The car will be available in some eye-catching colors, such as Yellow Pop and Green Pop.
However, the Renault 5 E-Tech is not just a retro remake. It is also a futuristic car that incorporates the latest in electrical architecture and underpinnings. It rides on a new platform called AmpR Small, which is designed to support a range of compact electric vehicles. The car will come with either a 40 kWh or a 52 kWh battery pack, which will power an electric motor that produces either 90 kW/120 hp or 110 kW/150 hp. The performance is punchy enough, with a 0-62 mph time of eight seconds in the most powerful models. The car also boasts agile handling and fun driving characteristics, according to Renault.
