The Voyah Free: China's Answer to Tesla Model 3?

The Voyah Free: China's Answer to Tesla Model 3?

If you are a fan of electric cars, you might have heard of the Voyah brand, a new subsidiary of Dongfeng Motor, one of China’s largest automakers. Voyah, which means “I am here” in Chinese, aims to challenge the likes of Tesla, NIO, and BYD in the booming EV market in China and beyond. The brand was launched in July 2020 with a promise to deliver “smart, green, and high-quality” vehicles that cater to the needs of young and tech-savvy consumers.

The first model from Voyah is the Free, a mid-sized SUV that claims to offer a long-range, high performance, and low price. The Free was officially launched in China on August 20, 2023, with a starting price of 36,660 USD (before subsidies). The Free comes in four variants: H97C, H97E, H97F, and H97G, with different battery sizes and power outputs. The top-of-the-line H97G boasts a whopping 1,221 km (758 miles) of NEDC range, thanks to its massive 150 kWh battery pack. That’s more than twice the Tesla Model 3 Long Range range range, which has a 75 kWh battery and a 568 km (353 miles) NEDC range.

But how does the Voyah Free compare to the Tesla Model 3 in other aspects? Let’s take a closer look at the specs and features of these two EVs.

Design and Dimensions

The Voyah Free has a sleek, futuristic design resembling a coupe-style SUV. The front fascia features a large grille with LED lights and a Voyah logo that can change colors according to the driving mode. The side profile has a sloping roofline and sharp lines, giving the Voyah Free a sporty look. The rear end has a spoiler, a diffuser, and LED taillights that span the car's width.

The Voyah Free measures 4,770 mm (187.8 inches) in length, 1,930 mm (76 inches) in width, and 1,635 mm (64.4 inches) in height. It has a wheelbase of 2,900 mm (114.2 inches) and a ground clearance of 200 mm (7.9 inches). It can seat five passengers comfortably and has a trunk capacity of 510 liters (18 cubic feet).

The Model 3, on the other hand, has a more conventional sedan design that is minimalist and elegant. The front end has no grille, only a small air intake and LED headlights. The side view has smooth curves and a low stance. The rear end has a trunk lid, LED taillights, and a subtle spoiler.

The Model 3 measures 4,694 mm (184.8 inches) in length, 1,849 mm (72.8 inches) in width, and 1,443 mm (56.8 inches) in height. It has a wheelbase of 2,875 mm (113.2 inches) and a ground clearance of 140 mm (5.5 inches). It can also seat five passengers and has a trunk capacity of 425 liters (15 cubic feet).

Performance and Efficiency

The Voyah Free offers four powertrain options: H97C, H97E, H97F, and H97G. All variants are equipped with a single electric motor that drives the front wheels. The H97C has a 60 kWh battery that delivers 160 kW (215 hp) of power and 310 Nm (229 lb-ft) of torque. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 8 seconds and reach a top speed of 160 km/h (99 mph). It has an NEDC range of 501 km (311 miles) and an energy consumption of 12 kWh/100 km.

The Voyah Free H97E has an 80 kWh battery that delivers 180 kW (241 hp) of power and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7 seconds and reach a top speed of 170 km/h (106 mph). It has an NEDC range of 701 km (436 miles) and an energy consumption of 11.4 kWh/100 km.

The Voyah Free H97F has a 100 kWh battery that delivers 200 kW (268 hp) of power and 390 Nm (288 lb-ft) of torque. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6 seconds and reach a top speed of 180 km/h (112 mph). It has an NEDC range of 901 km (560 miles) and an energy consumption of 11.1 kWh/100 km.

The Voyah Free H97G has a 150 kWh battery that delivers 220 kW (295 hp) of power and 430 Nm (317 lb-ft) of torque. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5 seconds and reach a top speed of 200 km/h (124 mph). It has an NEDC range of 1,221 km (758 miles) and an energy consumption of 12.3 kWh/100 km.

The Tesla Model 3 offers three powertrain options: Standard Range Plus, Long Range, and Performance. All variants are equipped with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system. The Standard Range Plus has a 55 kWh battery that delivers 211 kW (283 hp) of power and 375 Nm (277 lb-ft) of torque. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 225 km/h (140 mph). It has an NEDC range of 445 km (277 miles) and an energy consumption of 12.4 kWh/100 km.

The Long Range has a 75 kWh battery that delivers 258 kW (346 hp) of power and 510 Nm (376 lb-ft) of torque. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 233 km/h (145 mph). It has an NEDC range of 568 km (353 miles) and an energy consumption of 13.2 kWh/100 km.

The Tesla Model 3 Performance has the same battery as the Long Range but delivers 340 kW (456 hp) of power and 639 Nm (471 lb-ft) of torque. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.1 seconds and reach a top speed of 261 km/h (162 mph). It has an NEDC range of 530 km (329 miles) and an energy consumption of 14.2 kWh/100 km.
