Dongfeng Nissan NX8 Launches in China With Up to 901 Miles Range

Dongfeng Nissan has launched the all-new Nissan NX8 in China, and the numbers tell the story fast. This new midsize electrified SUV arrives as the third model in Nissan's China-focused N Series, and it brings a two-pronged powertrain strategy that speaks directly to local demand: a pure battery-electric vehicle and a range-extended EV with gasoline backup.

Looking at the data, the NX8 matters because Nissan did not play it safe. The company gave this SUV an 800V electrical architecture, 5C fast-charging capability, a long list of standard comfort features, and a pricing window that starts at roughly $23,300 and runs to about $30,700 in official terms, with a launch promo starting near $20,700. In China's ultra-competitive EV market, that pricing puts pressure on a lot of familiar names.

Nissan NX8 Size, Positioning, and Why It Matters

The Dongfeng Nissan NX8 sits in the heart of the family-SUV segment, but it does not package itself like a traditional three-row Nissan. It measures 191.7 inches (4,870 mm) long, 75.6 inches (1,920 mm) wide, and 66.1 inches (1,680 mm) tall, riding on a 114.8-inch (2,917 mm) wheelbase. By comparison, that makes it very close in footprint to the current Nissan Pathfinder in wheelbase terms, even though the U.S.-market Pathfinder stretches longer overall.

From an expert perspective, that sizing choice makes sense. Nissan appears to have chased cabin efficiency, second-row comfort, and cargo utility instead of chasing old-school three-row bulk. The NX8 uses a five-seat layout, and that lets Dongfeng Nissan push interior space harder where families will feel it every day.

That cargo figure alone says a lot. A 773-liter luggage area that Nissan says can swallow up to 35 suitcases tells buyers this SUV targets family travel, airport duty, and weekend hauling without asking owners to step into a larger, heavier full-size product.

Two Powertrains, Two Different Jobs

The Nissan NX8 EV lineup includes three trims: 580 Pro, 580 Max, and 650 Max. Nissan quotes up to 650 km (404 miles) of CLTC range. In addition, the EV version can recover roughly 300 km (186 miles) of driving range in six minutes under the right fast-charging conditions.

That six-minute claim grabs attention because it signals the real engineering play here. An 800V system cuts current for a given power level, which helps thermal control, cable sizing, and charge performance. Pair that with 5C charging, and Nissan can push energy into the pack at a rate that moves the ownership conversation away from "How long will I wait?" and closer to "Can I treat this like a quick coffee stop?"

The Nissan NX8 range-extended EV takes a different route. Nissan offers 150 Pro, 150 Max, and 310 Max versions, with up to 310 km (193 miles) of EV-only range and up to 1,450 km (901 miles) of total CLTC range. Fuel consumption in generator-assisted operation lands at 4.51 L/100 km, which converts to roughly 52.2 mpg US.

By comparison, the REEV version solves a very different buyer problem. It gives urban owners a mostly electric daily routine, then removes charging anxiety for holiday traffic, long intercity runs, and colder-weather road trips where charging lines can stack up fast.

Cabin Tech, Comfort, and the Family-Buyer Pitch

Nissan packed the NX8 with hardware that Chinese buyers now expect in this class. The dashboard uses dual 15.6-inch displays, Nissan OS 2.0, an AI voice assistant, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295P chip, 256 GB of storage, and an AR-HUD with a display effect Nissan equates to 63 inches.

Specifically, Nissan did not stop at screen size. The company also loaded the NX8 with daily-use features that try to win the family buyer with comfort and convenience, not just acceleration figures:

  • AI Zero Gravity Seat 2.0 with 25 massage and support airbags
  • Power-reclining rear seats with heating, ventilation, and massage
  • AI contactless airflow control
  • Motion sickness prevention technology 3.0
  • Bi-directional refrigerator/freezer operating from -6 C to 55 C
  • Pet Protection Mode that maintains cabin conditions and warns the driver

That refrigerator detail sounds flashy, but it has real logic behind it. Family SUVs in China now compete on daily-life utility as much as drivetrain spec. Cold drinks, warm food, pet-safe cabin control, and reclining massaging rear seats turn the NX8 into a mobile living space, which fits local buyer behavior far better than a stripped-down "driver's SUV" pitch.

Safety and Battery Engineering

Nissan says the NX8 uses its Cloud Shield Battery 2.0 system with CATL cells and validation across 146 safety tests. In addition, the SUV uses 24-hour cloud monitoring, a steel-aluminum hybrid body, and 2,000 MPa-class ultra-high-strength steel in the structure.

Consequently, Nissan has aimed at two buyer anxieties at once: battery safety and crash safety. That matters in China, where EV buyers have become highly spec-literate and increasingly skeptical of broad marketing claims. A big screen may draw clicks, but battery validation and body-structure numbers close deals.

The driver-assistance side also matters. Nissan developed the system with Momenta, pairing it with the large AR head-up display to cut driver workload in dense traffic and long-distance use.

Where the NX8 Fits Against Rivals

The NX8 enters a brutal segment. It faces products that already sell on software, charging, long range, and family packaging.

Pro-Tips for Reading the NX8 Spec Sheet

  • Do not compare CLTC figures directly to EPA numbers. CLTC usually reads higher, so real-world range will land lower.
  • Treat the REEV as a use-case tool. If you drive long distances often, the gasoline-backed format may fit better than a pure EV.
  • Watch charging curve details, not just headline speed. The six-minute recovery figure sounds strong, but sustained charging behavior matters more on a real trip.

What Now?

The NX8 gives Dongfeng Nissan a serious answer in China's electrified SUV fight. It combines fast charging, long-range REEV flexibility, aggressive pricing, and a feature sheet that reads like a local-market wish list.

For buyers in China, the next move is simple: compare the 580 Max and 310 Max against your actual driving pattern. For Nissan, the next move looks bigger. If this is the brand's new China playbook, the rest of its global lineup suddenly looks old.
