Ford is testing a robotic charging station for electric vehicles

For their latest innovation, Ford has created a prototype of a robotic charging station that can be activated by the driver's mobile phone without the need to exit the vehicle. Combining this technology with autonomous vehicles could one day make charging completely hands-free.

Charging an electric vehicle may seem easy to the average person, but it might be difficult for those with limited mobility or the elderly. Ford is now testing a robotic charging station as part of a bigger initiative to perfect automated charging options for electric vehicles and, ultimately, autonomous vehicles.

We want everyone to be able to move about without any restrictions. Some motorists find it challenging to obtain gasoline or fuel or find an electrical outlet close enough to their destination. The robotic charging station simplifies this.

Automatic charging stations

With the press of a button, the charging arm of the robot station opens and, with the aid of a miniature camera, locates the appropriate charging socket on the vehicle. Those taking part in the trial can keep tabs on their charging progress via the FordPass app. When the charge is complete, it detaches from the car and returns to its starting position.

"There have been years since I last put gas in my car. What he does for me, my hubby, That level of difficulty was just too much for me. Thanks to the automated charging station, I won't have to rely on anybody else to keep my electric car charged in the future, " Angela Aben explains. Even though she has a disability, she has done well in the communications field at Ford Europe.

The University of Dortmund in Germany is responsible for developing a unique charging station for robots that can be deployed in the future in car parks and private houses. Future electric vehicles could be charged more quickly with this method.

Soon the driver may be useless during the charging process if it is automatic. The driver can call his self-driving car back after the charging process is over. This study is a part of Ford's overall strategy to electrify the entire company. The IONITY rapid charging network is working on a follow-up project to improve the automated charging station.

Due to the expansion of Ford's Blue Oval Charging Network, Ford customers in Europe now have access to more than 300,000 charging stations. Ford Charge Assist is a part of the Ford SYNC 4 infotainment system that helps drivers find charging stations and pay for them using the touchscreen in the car.
