Hyundai Motor Company and Ineos Group have announced that they want to jointly develop hydrogen battery technology for electric cars. According to a signed memorandum of understanding between companies, the allies intend to jointly investigate possibilities for the production and delivery of hydrogen as well as the worldwide use of hydrogen applications, technologies and business models.
The primary aim is to set up a corresponding infrastructure for all aspects of hydrogen in Europe. For this purpose, both companies want to try to promote projects of the public and private sector that focus on hydrogen. Hyundai and Ineos hope that the hydrogen-powered cars will gain momentum globally.
The partners also want to explore and evaluate whether the fuel cell drive developed by Hyundai is also suitable for the Ineos Grenadier off-road vehicle.
Mark Tennant, commercial director of Ineos Automotive, explained why the Ineos Grenadier was using the fuel cell and not a battery-electric drive as an electrification option: because of its off-road use. "Were looking to build a very functional, utilitarian 4x4 that can work in the middle of nowhere. To take up a useable payload with a battery pack that would make the range adequate for those sorts of applications doesn’t make sense. That’s why we’re looking at hydrogen fuel cells."
Last year, Hyundai became the world's largest manufacturer of hydrogen-powered electric cars. In December 2019, the Asian manufacturer managed to break the record for the longest distance travelled with such a model between two recharges, after a Hyundai Nexo travelled 778 kilometres.
Ineos, through its subsidiary Inovyn, is one of the largest operators of electrolysis systems in Europe and therefore has expertise in the production and storage of hydrogen.
