Stellantis NV, a leading global automotive company, has introduced its groundbreaking STLA Medium platform, a state-of-the-art Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) platform designed to redefine the concept of clean, safe, and affordable mobility. With its cutting-edge features, including an impressive range of over 700 km (435 miles), energy efficiency, ample onboard energy, and rapid charging capabilities, the STLA Medium platform sets a new standard in the automotive industry.
The STLA Medium platform boasts an extended range and built-in flexibility, enabling the production of a diverse range of vehicles with different drivetrain configurations. It specifically targets the key market segments, C and D, which accounted for a staggering 35 million vehicle sales in 2022, almost half of the global sales that year. In comparison to the current scenario, where Stellantis brands employ numerous platforms to offer 26 vehicle models in these segments, the STLA Medium platform will streamline the process, allowing for the production of up to 2 million vehicles annually across various plants worldwide, beginning with Europe this year.

The introduction of the STLA Medium platform marks the first of four global BEV platforms announced by Stellantis on EV Day in July 2021. These platforms play a crucial role in Stellantis' Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan, which aims to achieve 100% sales mix with battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in Europe and 50% with passenger cars and light commercial BEVs in the US by 2030. The plan also outlines radical reductions in emissions, aiming to halve the CO2 produced by 2030 compared to 2021 parameters, with the ultimate goal of achieving zero carbon emissions by 2038, accompanied by a single-digit offset of the remaining emissions.
One of the standout features of the STLA Medium platform is its remarkable range. The Performance package offers an industry-leading range of over 700 km (435 miles), while the Standard package delivers over 500 km (310 miles) according to the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP). In addition, the platform boasts an exceptional energy output of up to 98-kilowatt hours (kWh), setting a new benchmark for energy storage in its class.
Furthermore, the STLA Medium platform utilizes a 400V electrical architecture, enabling best-in-class energy efficiency and charge times. With a consumption rate potentially lower than 14 kWh per 100 km, the platform's energy efficiency surpasses all competitors. The owners of STLA Medium-based vehicles can charge their batteries from 20% to 80% in just 27 minutes, with a charging rate of 2.4 kWh per minute.
The STLA Medium platform is engineered to accommodate various vehicle types, including sedans, crossovers, and SUVs. The platform's flexibility empowers Stellantis designers to create vehicles with a variable wheelbase ranging from 2,700 to 2,900 mm, an overall length of 4.3-4.9 meters, a ground clearance exceeding 220 mm for off-road capability, and wheels with a diameter of up to 750 mm, which enhances the vehicle's design.
Stellantis has also prioritized the efficient assembly of the energy-dense single-layer modular battery pack within the STLA Medium platform. This maximizes interior space, improves the vehicle's center of gravity, and optimizes ride and handling performance. Additionally, platform components such as the air conditioning system, steering, braking system, and propulsion system are meticulously designed to minimize energy consumption, further enhancing the platform's range and overall performance.
The STLA Medium platform not only boasts impressive performance and efficiency but also offers cost advantages and increased production volumes. The battery assembly costs are best-in-class, while the constant perimeter dimensions of the battery pack, regardless of energy capacity variants, are achieved through an innovative shape and common cooling system.
