Tesla has opened U.S. orders for the 2027 Tesla Model Y L Premium Launch Series at $61,990. The stretched electric SUV adds a 2+2+2 cabin, a 325-mile estimated range, dual-motor all-wheel drive, and useful third-row space. Tesla lists first deliveries for October through November 2026.

What is the Tesla Model Y L Premium?

The Tesla Model Y L Premium extends the current Tesla Model Y rather than replacing it. Tesla adds 5.9 inches to the wheelbase, about 7.0 inches to total length, two captain's chairs in the second row, and a larger rear section. The result targets families who found the regular Model Y's optional third row too tight.

Tesla sells the U.S. version first as a loaded Launch Series with premium hardware, software subscriptions, free charging, special trim, and a factory tow hitch. It still costs $12,000 more than a Model Y Premium AWD.

Orders opened in July, but deliveries will not arrive during summer. Tesla's configurator shows an October-November 2026 delivery window, which points to a production ramp at Gigafactory Texas rather than immediate inventory.

How much larger is the Model Y L?

The 2027 Tesla Model Y L measures 195.9 inches long, 75.6 inches wide, and 65.7 inches tall, with a 119.7-inch wheelbase. Tesla kept the width close to the regular Model Y, then placed nearly all dimensional growth between and behind the axles. That adds cabin length without making the vehicle much harder to park.

Measurement Model Y L Premium Model Y Premium AWD Difference
Overall length 195.9 in / 4,976 mm 188.9 in / 4,797 mm +7.0 in / 179 mm
Wheelbase 119.7 in / 3,040 mm 113.8 in / 2,890 mm +5.9 in / 150 mm
Width without mirrors 75.6 in / 1,920 mm 75.6 in / 1,920 mm No change
Height 65.7 in / 1,668 mm 63.9 in / 1,624 mm +1.7 in / 44 mm
Curb weight 4,612 lb / 2,092 kg 4,473 lb / 2,029 kg +139 lb / 63 kg
Maximum cargo volume 89.7 cu ft / 2,539 L 75.5 cu ft / 2,138 L +14.2 cu ft / 401 L

Tesla gained substantial cabin volume for only 139 pounds of listed curb-weight growth. The 1.7-inch height increase helps third-row headroom, while 6.7 inches of unladen ground clearance keeps the Model Y L focused on paved-road family use.

Are all six seats genuinely usable?

The Model Y L provides six individual seats in a 2+2+2 layout. Second-row passengers receive heated and ventilated captain's chairs, powered armrests, and one-touch movement for third-row access. Third-row passengers get heated seats, power recline, airbags, and child-seat anchors.

Key interior figures include:

  • First-row legroom: 41.8 inches
  • Second-row legroom: 39.7 inches
  • Third-row legroom: 31.0 inches
  • Third-row headroom: 38.1 inches
  • Third-row shoulder room: 42.9 inches
  • Third-row hip room: 37.0 inches

The 31.0-inch third-row legroom nearly matches the Kia EV9's 30.8 inches. The Tesla's narrower shoulder measurement limits adult comfort, so the rear row works best for children, teens, or shorter drives.

Tesla lists 14.8 cubic feet behind the third row, plus a 4.1-cubic-foot front trunk. Fold the third row and rear cargo volume rises to 38.0 cubic feet. Fold rows two and three and the rear compartment reaches 85.6 cubic feet, or 89.7 cubic feet after adding the front trunk.

What powertrain does the Model Y L use?

Tesla equips the U.S. Model Y L with dual-motor all-wheel drive, a claimed 4.4-second 0-60 mph time, and a 125-mph top speed. That acceleration gives the six-seat crossover sports-sedan pace despite its 4,612-pound curb weight.

Tesla does not publish official horsepower, torque, or usable battery capacity. Third-party databases place output near 331 kW, roughly 444 horsepower, and battery capacity near 79-83 kWh. Buyers should view those figures as estimates.

The official range reaches 325 miles with 19-inch Machina 2.0 wheels. Choosing 20-inch Uberhelix wheels lowers the estimate to 320 miles because the larger package adds mass and rolling resistance. The 19-inch setup should also deliver a softer ride and cheaper replacement tires.

Tesla adds adaptive dampers, staggered tires, upgraded acoustic glass, and revised suspension tuning. Adaptive damping fits the wider load range, controlling body motion with one driver aboard and adding support with six occupants and luggage.

How fast can the Model Y L charge?

The Model Y L uses a native NACS charging port and supports up to 250 kW DC fast charging. Tesla also gives it direct Supercharger access, integrated route planning, automatic battery preconditioning, and plug-in billing. Those features reduce charging friction on family trips.

Tesla still uses a lower-voltage electrical system than the 800V Kia EV9 and Hyundai IONIQ 9. The Korean SUVs can accept high charging power with lower current, which reduces heat. Hyundai lists a 24-minute 10-80% session for the IONIQ 9 on a compatible 350-kW CCS charger.

The Tesla counters with charger availability and native compatibility. Battery temperature, arrival charge level, and the charging curve still control actual stop length.

An 11-kW Level 2 supply should refill roughly 10-80% in about six hours after charging losses, making overnight home charging easy.

What comes with the Launch Series?

Tesla uses the Launch Series to push early buyers toward one loaded configuration. The bundle carries real dollar value, but several benefits expire after 12 months and others only help owners who use public charging or Tesla's supervised driver-assistance software frequently.

The package includes:

  • 12 months of Full Self-Driving (Supervised)
  • 12 months of free Supercharging
  • 12 months of Premium Connectivity
  • Any offered exterior paint at no extra charge
  • Black or Zen Grey interior trim
  • 19-inch or 20-inch wheels at no extra charge
  • A factory tow hitch
  • Launch Series badging, door sills, puddle lights, and floor mats
  • Suede-style dashboard inserts
  • An 18-speaker audio system with one subwoofer

The tow hitch supports up to 3,500 pounds, covering small utility trailers, light campers, and compact boats. A tall trailer raises aerodynamic drag, so owners should plan around half to two-thirds of the solo-driving range until trip data proves otherwise.

Full Self-Driving remains supervised. The driver must watch the road and stay ready to take control. The included year carries a retail subscription value of about $1,188 at $99 per month, but that amount only counts as savings for a buyer who planned to subscribe.

How does the Model Y L price compare with three-row EVs?

The Model Y L enters a price band already occupied by larger electric SUVs. It offers strong range and acceleration, yet the Hyundai IONIQ 9 and Kia EV9 provide wider cabins, more cargo room behind the third row, and faster 800V charging on suitable equipment.

Vehicle Starting MSRP Seats EPA range Length Cargo behind third row 0-60 mph Peak DC charging
Tesla Model Y L Launch Series $61,990 6 325 mi 195.9 in 14.8 cu ft 4.4 sec 250 kW
Tesla Model Y Premium AWD $49,990 5, optional 7 327 mi 188.9 in Smaller rear area 4.6 sec 250 kW
Hyundai IONIQ 9 S $58,955 7 335 mi 199.2 in 21.9 cu ft 9.4 sec About 233 kW
Kia EV9 Light Long Range RWD About $57,900 7 304 mi 197.2 in About 20-22 cu ft About 8.8 sec About 210 kW

By comparison, the Model Y L costs $3,035 more than the IONIQ 9 S and about $4,090 more than the EV9 Light Long Range before destination charges and options. The Tesla drives much quicker and offers native Supercharger integration, but the Korean SUVs give six or seven passengers a broader cabin and more luggage room.

The regular Model Y Premium AWD creates the toughest internal comparison. It costs $12,000 less, travels two miles farther on its official estimate, and accelerates only 0.2 second slower. The higher price buys the longer body, six-seat packaging, upgraded cabin hardware, adaptive damping, special trim, and one-year services.

Is the Tesla Model Y L worth $61,990?

The Model Y L makes sense for buyers who need six seats, prefer Tesla's charging system, and want quick acceleration in a family crossover. It makes less financial sense for five-seat households, while families carrying six adults often will gain more shoulder room and luggage space from an IONIQ 9 or EV9.

The Launch Series bundle can offset several thousand dollars through the tow hitch, paint choice, wheel choice, one year of FSD, Premium Connectivity, and free Supercharging. Home-charging households that skip FSD will capture far less value.

At 12,000 annual miles and 3.3 miles per kWh, the vehicle would consume about 3,636 kWh before charging losses. At $0.15 per kWh at home, energy costs about $545. At $0.35 per kWh on paid fast chargers, the same energy costs about $1,273, so free Supercharging can help a road-trip-heavy owner.

The federal purchase credit no longer cuts the sticker price. Buyers face the full MSRP plus destination, order, registration, tax, insurance, and financing costs. Resale values may also move quickly if Tesla releases a cheaper Model Y L trim soon after the Launch Series.

Pro-Tips before placing an order

  1. Choose the 19-inch wheels for range and ride comfort. They preserve the 325-mile estimate, reduce tire cost, and add more sidewall.
  2. Test the third row with actual passengers. The 31.0-inch legroom works well, but shoulder width still limits adult comfort.
  3. Get an insurance quote for the exact trim. Replacement cost, glass area, cameras, and approved repair requirements can raise premiums.
  4. Price a Level 2 charging installation before delivery. Home charging protects operating-cost savings.
  5. Compare the Launch Series with a future standard trim. Tesla has not announced one, but a lower-priced version remains plausible.
  6. Plan towing range conservatively. Start with a 160-210-mile highway estimate, then adjust after logging consumption with the actual trailer.

The no-BS verdict

Tesla fixed the Model Y's biggest family weakness. The Model Y L Premium offers six usable seats, 325 miles of estimated range, flexible cargo space, quick acceleration, and native Supercharger access. The $61,990 Launch Series price feels aggressive, so buyers should compare cabin width, charging speed, insurance, and likely depreciation before ordering.

For five-person households, the Model Y Premium AWD remains the smarter purchase. Regular six-passenger use favors the roomier IONIQ 9 or EV9. Buyers who want Tesla software, speed, charging access, and captain's chairs now have a clear option.
