The city of Stockholm is known for its commitment to environmental and social responsibility, as well as its innovative approach to urban planning and mobility. One of the latest examples of this is the introduction of the Mercedes-Benz eEconic truck, a fully electric vehicle designed for municipal services such as waste collection and recycling.
The Mercedes-Benz eEconic truck is based on the eActros, a heavy-duty electric truck that has been successfully tested in various European markets since 2018. The eEconic combines the zero-emission and low-noise benefits of the eActros with the ergonomic and safety features of the Econic, a conventional truck that has been widely used by municipal operators for years.
The eEconic truck has a low-entry cab that allows the driver and the crew to enter and exit the vehicle easily and safely, as well as a panoramic windshield and a glazed passenger door that provide a clear view of the surroundings. The truck also has a high-performance braking system, a blind spot camera, and a sideguard assist system that warns the driver of pedestrians and cyclists in critical situations.
The Mercedes-Benz eEconic electric truck has a range of up to 300 kilometers, depending on the usage profile and the climatic conditions. The electric truck can be charged at a depot or a public charging station, using either direct or alternating current. The battery system consists of three or four modules, each with a capacity of 112 kWh. The truck also has an energy recovery system that converts the kinetic energy of braking into electrical energy, which can be used to extend the range or power the auxiliary equipment.
The eEconic truck is part of the Mercedes-Benz Trucks’ eMobility Roadmap, which aims to offer a comprehensive portfolio of electric trucks for various applications and segments by 2022. The eEconic truck entered series production in 2022, and is available in the 6x2/N NLA configuration, with a gross vehicle weight of 27 tons.
The city of Stockholm was one of the first customers to order the eEconic truck, as part of its ambitious goal to become fossil-free by 2040. The city ordered 15 units of the eEconic truck, which were delivered in the second half of 2021, and have been tested in real-world conditions for a year. The project was supported by the Swedish Energy Agency, which provided funding for the development and testing of electric vehicles and charging infrastructure.
The eEconic truck is not only a sustainable and efficient solution for urban mobility, but also a safe and comfortable one for the drivers and the residents. By using the eEconic truck, the city of Stockholm hopes to reduce its carbon footprint, noise pollution, and traffic accidents, as well as to improve the working conditions and the quality of life of its citizens.

In 2024, the eEconic truck has also been used for road safety purposes by the company TMA Bolaget, which operates two special eEconic vehicles equipped with mobile impact attenuators to secure construction sites of short duration. The vehicles also have a separate battery system with solar cells to power the safety equipment. The eEconic truck has proven to be a reliable and versatile partner for the city of Stockholm and its service providers.
