Hyundai Motor Group released Tuesday details on E-GMP (Electric-Global Modular Platform), the company's first dedicated electric car platform. From 2021, E-GMP will be the basis for a new portfolio of battery-electric cars, including Hyundai's brand new IONIQ 5 which will be launched at the beginning of the year.
The E-GMP is designed exclusively for electric cars, the platform offers a number of advantages compared to the group's existing platforms. Electric cars based on E-GMP can provide range over 500 kilometres (WLTP) on a single charge and can be charged to 80% in less than 18 minutes.
The E-GMP's advantages include increased development flexibility, very solid driving performance, increased autonomy, even better safety, and much more space for both passengers and luggage.
The new Electric-Global Modular Platform reduces complexity through modularization and standardization, thus ensuring rapid and flexible development of new models across most car segments, including sedans, SUVs and crossovers.
E-GMP ensures maximum space utilization through greatly long wheelbase, short front and rear overhangs, and an intelligent cockpit module. The battery pack is installed under the floor between the front and rear wheels, and E-GMP thus provides a perfectly flat floor in the passenger compartment. This not only provides more legroom but also the possibility of a number of adjustments in the placement of the front and rear seats. The energy density has been increased by about 10% compared to today's electric car batteries.
E-GMP's compact new electric driveline system consists of a powerful electric motor, an electric car gearbox and an inverter. This system ensures solid performance by increasing the electric motor's maximum speed by up to 70% measured against existing electric motors. The high-speed motor is smaller than other electric motors, at the same time as it provides better performance in the form of lower weight and fewer space requirements.
Unlike existing electric cars, which only allow one-way charging, the charging system in E-GMP is far more flexible. The V2L system can powerup most electrical appliances, and can even be used to charge other electric cars.
E-GMP establishes the basis for Hyundai Motor Group's plans to introduce a total of 23 battery-electric models by 2025. This includes 11 dedicated electric cars, and the group expects to sell one million electric cars annually by the same year. As part of the company's electric car program, Hyundai Motor Company launched its dedicated electric car model brand IONIQ in August 2020.
