The NIO electric car start-up, which is already successful in China, wants to gain a foothold in Europe in the future. Before the further expansion planned for 2022, the company presented its fifth model at the end of the current year. The new NIO ET5 electric car (4.79 meters long and 1.49 meters) is a medium-sized sedan in the style of the bestselling Tesla Model 3.

The NIO ET5, with its 360 kW (480 hp) four-wheel drive, is expected to accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in up to 4.3 seconds and with the 75 kWh standard battery that stores over 550 kilometers in the Chinese CLTC driving cycle. With the middle 100 kWh battery pack, over 700 kilometers, and with the 150 kWh battery, even more than 1000 kilometers per charge should be possible. The drag coefficient of just 0.24 should also contribute to this, but the ranges are likely to be lower according to the European WLTP driving cycle.

The new NIO ET5 electric car is designed to achieve five out of five stars in the Euro-NCAP tests (European safety rating). The NIO company also emphasizes the seamless integration of advanced self-driving technology. In the interior, high levels of comfort, premium sound, and state-of-the-art digitization, including augmented reality functionality and the use of sustainable materials, are advertised. Furthermore, the interior can be transformed into a large cinema with special virtual reality glasses during the loading and rest times.

NIO wants to start delivering the ET5 to customers in China from the equivalent of around 46,000 euros from September 2022. In China, the brand will first offer the larger ET7. At the NIO ET5 electric car presentation, the company confirmed that they wanted to start next year in Germany and the Netherlands, Sweden, and Denmark. The European offensive has been in preparation for several months, with the first sales in Norway. In 2025, NIO wants to be present in over 25 countries and regions worldwide.

In addition to its modern, powerful, everyday electric cars, NIO also brings its sales concept to Europe. The Chinese are putting the customer in the focus of their efforts. This includes flagship stores dubbed "NIO House" and smaller "NIO Space" locations as well as battery exchange stations, "Battery-as-a-Service" subscription models, and some other services. The electric car manufacturer also desires to build an NIO community in Europe and China, in which customers and the company are in close contact.
