The Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 is not your average electric truck. It is a heavy-duty vehicle that can travel up to 310 miles on a single charge, haul up to 40 tons of cargo, and withstand extreme temperatures. It is also part of the integrated eActros solution, which includes eConsulting and digital services to help fleet owners transition to zero-emission transport.
But how does the eActros 600 perform in real-world conditions? To find out, Mercedes-Benz Trucks engineers have been testing prototypes of the battery-electric truck in various locations across Europe, including the former military training ground in Münsingen, Germany, and the sunny roads of Andalusia, Spain.
Testing the eActros 600 in Spain
Spain is one of the most important markets for Mercedes-Benz Trucks, with a market share of over 20% in the heavy-duty segment. Due to the high temperatures, steep gradients, and long distances make it a challenging environment for electric vehicles.
That is why Mercedes-Benz Trucks chose Spain as one of the test locations for the Mercedes-Benz eActros 600. The aim was to evaluate the electric truck's performance, reliability, and efficiency under demanding conditions.
The testing took place in July and August 2023, with two prototypes of the eActros 600 covering more than 6,200 miles on public roads in Andalusia. The routes included urban, interurban, and highway sections with varying speed limits and traffic densities. The trucks also faced up to 15% gradients and ambient temperatures of up to 113°F.
The results were impressive: The eActros 600 demonstrated its ability to cope with the heat, thanks to its advanced thermal management system that regulates the temperature of the batteries, motors, and other components. The truck also showed high efficiency and range, achieving an average energy consumption of less than 1.5 kWh per mile. Depending on the driving style, load, and terrain, the truck can travel up to 310 miles on a single charge.
The charging process was also smooth and fast: The eActros 600 uses an 800-volt system architecture that allows it to charge from 20% to 80% in less than an hour with a charging capacity of 160 kW. The electric truck can be charged at any CCS Combo-2 compatible charging station widely available in Spain.
The drivers who participated in the testing were also satisfied with the Mercedes-Benz eActros 600. They praised its quietness, comfort, and handling. They also appreciated its powerful acceleration, braking performance, and advanced assistance systems that enhance safety and convenience.
