Volkswagen e-BULLI: fully electric camper-van from 64,900 euros

Volkswagen Trucks presents e-BULLI, a fully electric vehicle that produces zero emissions on the road. The concept vehicle is equipped with drive system components from Volkswagen's latest electric vehicle and is based on a T1 Samba bus that was produced in 1966 and has been completely renovated.

An important message to all fans of the folk bus and electric mobility: the combination of classic attributes and high-tech electric drive system will be available for sale. Volkswagen Transportcar's partner eClassics plans to offer T1 conversions and finished vehicles in the style of new e-BULLI.

The 44 hp (32 kW) four-cylinder boxer engine has left the place for a quiet Volkswagen electric motor that provides 83 hp (61 kW) in e-BULLI. The new unit with a maximum torque of 212 Nm provides more than twice the power of the original 1961 T1 engine (102 Nm). The maximum torque is also available - which is typical for electric motors - directly. And that changes everything. Never before has there been an "official" T1 as powerful as e-BULLI. Combined with zero emissions, this will be an attractive combination for anyone who loves the classic folk bus shape.

Power transmission takes place with a 1-speed gearbox. The drive system is connected to the gear lever, which is now positioned between the driver and the front passenger seat. The positions of the automatic transmission (P, R, N, D, B) are displayed next to the lever. Volkswagen e-BULLI has a top speed of 130 km / h (electronically limited). With the original petrol engine, the T1 was able to reach a top speed of 105 km / h.

Just like the original version from 1966, the gearbox and electric motor are behind the rear axle in e-BULLI. A lithium-ion battery is responsible for supplying the electric motor with power. The useful energy capacity of the battery is 45 kWh.

All original electrical parts of the drive system are manufactured by Volkswagen Group Components in Kassel. As in the new ID.3 and future ID.BUZZ, the high-voltage battery is housed centrally under the floor. This layout lowers the centre of gravity and thus improves driving characteristics.

The battery is charged via a CCS socket. It allows charging with alternating current or direct current. It can be charged up to 80 per cent in 40 minutes. The range with a full battery charge is more than 200 kilometres.

Compared to the T1, it feels completely different to drive e-BULLI. This feeling is strengthened by the reworked chassis. Multi-link axles front and rear with adjustable shock absorbers, a revised steering and ventilated disc brakes all around contribute to more modern, dynamic and at the same time quieter and safer driving experience.

Parallel to the new electric drive system, an interior concept has been created for e-BULLI, which is both stylish and avant-garde. The new look and corresponding technical solutions were developed by Volkswagen Transportcar's design centre in collaboration with Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles (VWCV) and the communications department.

Via Volkswagen's 'We Connect', e-BULLI can communicate with a smartphone and send information such as: remaining charge time, current range, kilometres travelled, travel times and energy consumption. The music on board comes from an authentic retro-style radio, which is additionally equipped with cutting-edge technology such as DAB +, Bluetooth and USB.
