Opel Astra Electric: The German Hatchback That Goes Beyond Expectations

Opel Astra Electric

The Opel Astra is one of Europe's most popular and versatile hatchbacks, offering a range of powertrain options, including diesel and plug-in hybrid. But now, the German brand has taken a bold step into the future with the introduction of the Opel Astra Electric, a fully electric version of the compact car that promises to deliver performance, efficiency, and style.

The Opel Astra Electric is based on the same platform as the new Peugeot 308 and DS 4, which are also part of the Stellantis group. This means that it shares some of the technology and features of its French cousins but with a distinctive Opel identity and flair.

What makes the Opel Astra Electric stand out?

One of the main advantages of the Opel Astra Electric is its battery capacity and range. The car uses a 54 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that provides a WLTP range of up to 400 km (248 miles) on a single charge. This is more than enough for most daily commutes and trips, and it also compares favorably with some of its rivals, such as the Volkswagen ID.3 and the Hyundai Ioniq 5.

The battery can be recharged at home or public charging points using either a standard Type 2 connector or a CCS connector for fast charging. The Opel Astra Electric supports up to 100 kW of fast charging power, which means that it can replenish 80% of its battery in about 30 minutes. The car also comes with a heat pump as standard, which helps to optimize battery efficiency and performance in different weather conditions.

The Opel Astra Electric is powered by a single electric motor that produces 154 hp (115 kW) and 260 Nm (192 lb-ft) of torque. The motor drives the front wheels, giving the car a smooth and responsive acceleration. The electric car can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 150 km/h (93 mph). The car also has three driving modes: Eco, Normal, and Sport, which adjust the power delivery and regenerative braking according to the driver's preference.

How does the Opel Astra Electric look and feel?

The Opel Astra Electric retains the sleek and modern design of the regular Astra but with some subtle differences that highlight its electric nature. The car features a black grille with an illuminated Opel logo, black door mirrors, and a black roof. It also has a unique 18-inch wheel design that improves aerodynamics and reduces the drag coefficient. At the rear, there is a small 'e' badge that indicates the electric version and a spoiler that wraps around the back window.

The interior of the Opel Astra Electric is spacious and comfortable, with plenty of room for five passengers and their luggage. The boot capacity is 352 liters (12.4 cubic feet), which can be expanded to 1,268 liters (44.8 cubic feet) by folding down the rear seats. The car also offers an estate variant, called the Opel Astra Sports Tourer Electric, which has a larger boot capacity of 540 liters (19 cubic feet), or 1,640 liters (57.9 cubic feet) with the seats down.

The dashboard of the Opel Astra Electric features a digital instrument cluster and an infotainment touchscreen that is integrated into a single black panel called the 'Pure Panel.' The instrument cluster has a minimalist design that shows only the essential information to the driver, such as speed, range, battery level, and navigation directions. The infotainment touchscreen is angled towards the driver for convenience, and it supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The car also has a color head-up display that projects key information onto the windshield.

The Opel Astra Electric comes with several advanced safety and assistance systems, such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, traffic sign recognition, automatic emergency braking, and park assist. The car also has a wireless smartphone charger, heated front seats and steering wheel, a heated windscreen, ambient lighting, and a panoramic sunroof.

Is the Opel Astra Electric worth buying?

The Opel Astra Electric is an attractive option for anyone looking for an electric hatchback that combines practicality, performance, and style. The electric car offers a generous range, fast charging capability, and a refined and comfortable ride. The car also has a distinctive design that sets it apart from other electric cars on the market.

The Opel Astra Electric will go on sale in Europe in the summer of 2023, starting from €34,900 ($39,000) in Germany. The car will compete with other electric hatchbacks such as the Volkswagen ID.3, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, and more.

How does Opel Astra Electric compare with its rivals?

The electric hatchback segment is becoming increasingly crowded and competitive, as more automakers are launching their own models to appeal to environmentally conscious and tech-savvy customers. The Opel Astra Electric faces tough competition from some of the industry's most established and innovative brands.

One of its closest rivals is the Volkswagen ID.3, which is based on the same MEB platform as the Opel Mokka-e and Opel Corsa-e. The ID.3 offers a similar range and performance as the Opel Astra Electric but with a slightly lower starting price of €32,990 ($36,800) in Germany. The ID.3 also has a more futuristic and minimalist interior design, with a large central touchscreen and a digital instrument cluster. However, the Opel Astra Electric has a more conventional and elegant exterior design, with a black grille and roof contrasting with the body color. The Opel Astra Electric also has a larger boot capacity than the Volkswagen ID.3, with 352 liters versus 385 liters.

Another rival is the Hyundai Ioniq 5, which is based on the new E-GMP platform that also underpins the Kia EV6. The Ioniq 5 has a larger battery capacity than the Opel Astra Electric, with 77.4 kWh versus 54 kWh. This translates into a longer range of up to 484 km (301 miles) on a single charge, according to WLTP standards. The Ioniq 5 also has a more powerful electric motor, with 204 hp (152 kW) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque. The Ioniq 5 can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.4 seconds, and reach a top speed of 185 km/h (115 mph). The Ioniq 5 also supports up to 220 kW of fast charging power, which means that it can replenish 80% of its battery in about 18 minutes. However, the Ioniq 5 is also more expensive than the Opel Astra Electric, with a starting price of €48,700 ($54,300) in Germany. The Ioniq 5 also has a more angular and retro-inspired design, which may not appeal to everyone.

The Kia EV6 is another rival that shares the same platform and technology as the Hyundai Ioniq 5. The EV6 has a similar range and performance as the Ioniq 5 but with a more sporty and dynamic design. The EV6 also offers a GT version that has a dual-motor system that produces 577 hp (430 kW) and 740 Nm (546 lb-ft) of torque. The EV6 GT can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.5 seconds, and reach a top speed of 260 km/h (162 mph). However, the EV6 is also more expensive than the Opel Astra Electric, with a starting price of €48,700 ($54,300) in Germany for the base model, and €99,590 ($111,100) for the GT model.
