Hyundai Motor Company has officially launched the new Ioniq 5. The fully electric crossover SUV is expected to be on sale before the middle of the year. The new Hyundai Ioniq 5 comes with two battery options, front-wheel and four-wheel drive.
The Hyundai Group drew attention in the field of ecological cars through the Kona Electric crossover. With a range of more than 480 km, Kona attracted many buyers who have seen in the small SUV a correct combination between conventional and 100% electric cars. Today, the presentation of the Ioniq 5, an electric SUV much larger than the Kona and which exceeds in size even the Hyundai Tucson Plug-In Hybrid, showed that the Korean brand can go much further.
The new Hyundai Ioniq 5 hides under the body the new Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) which allows a very good weight distribution even if we are talking about a large electric vehicle. The electric car is a very spacious family car with 4,635 mm in length (+13 mm compared to Hyundai Tucson) and 1,890 mm in width and pushes the boundaries of proportions with its extremely long wheelbase (3,000 millimetres - 32 mm larger than Tucson).
IONIQ 5 will be available with rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive, and you can choose between battery packs of either 58kWh or 72.6 kWh.
More importantly, the rear-wheel-drive version equipped with a 72.6 kWh battery, ensures a maximum range of up to 480 km. At the same time, those eager for superior performance can enjoy the four-wheel drive with 306 hp and 605 Nm delivered by two electric motors that accelerate the electric crossover SUV from 0 to 100 km / h in just 5.3 seconds.
The version with a 58 kWh battery is intended for those who are more careful about spending money than to top performance. Thus, in the rear-wheel-drive, Ioniq 5 provides the driver with 170 hp and 350 Nm, the acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h being made in 8.5 seconds. Also, the new Ioniq 5 with a 58 kWh and four-wheel drive develops 235 hp and 605 Nm, and the acceleration is achieved in 6.1 seconds. Top speed is limited at 185 km/h.
With the Ioniq 5, Hyundai has presented a crossover SUV that, with a three-meter wheelbase and a length of 4.6 meters, offers a vast interior. Even the centre console can be moved, the driver's seat can be converted into a recliner and the rear bench can be moved. With all the seats in the normal position, the trunk volume is 531 litres, but by folding the rear seats you get 1,591 litres. The storage space placed in the front compartment adds 24 l for the AWD and 57 l for the 2WD version.
As in most cases, the design of the concept is reflected to a small extent in the production version. This is not the case with the new Ioniq 5, which has kept its angular lines, retractable door handles, camcorders that replace exterior mirrors, 20-inch alloy wheels and LED headlights or taillights from the Hyundai 45 concept.
Another extremely important detail is that the new Hyundai Ioniq 5 allows charging power of up to 350 kWh (IONIQ 5 can be charged from 10 to 80% in just 18 minutes.). For a range of 100 kilometres, it is sufficient to spend only 5 minutes at a fast-charging station.
Hyundai offers a wide range of driver assistance systems (). It is still unclear which ones are subject to a surcharge. The Ioniq 5 is the first Hyundai model to offer the HDA2 motorway assistant (thanks to the front camera and radar sensors as well as navigation data, the system keeps the lane and the distance to the car in front).
The electric SUV has navigation-based smart cruise control (NSCC), automatic emergency braking assistant, remote-controlled parking assistant that allows the car to park without a driver on board, a Surround View Monitor with 360-degree camera view, smart speed limit assistant, high beam assistant and much more.
Customers can buy the Hyundai Ioniq 5 at a particularly favourable launch price of 48,500 euros including all equipment, 72.6 kWh battery pack and four-wheel drive. Clients who book and order an IONIQ 5 also receive a two-year free IONITY subscription, which significantly reduces charging prices on Europe's leading charging network.
Special mention should be made of its innovative Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function, which allows customers to use or charge electrical devices, such as electric bicycles, scooters or camping equipment.
The new IONIQ 5 can also optionally equip a sunroof that helps to collect energy and transfer it to the battery pack, improving efficiency.
Deliveries will take place in the summer of 2021; this means a very short waiting time for buyers.
In 2022, the Asian manufacturer is expected to expand the Ioniq range with a new Ioniq 6 model, and in 2024, Hyundai Ioniq 7 will make its debut.
