Klasse BMW iX3 Electric SUV
The BMW iX3 50 xDrive is more than a model refresh. It is the first Neue Klasse SUV, built on a new platform, with new software, and a new battery system. Production begins in late 2025, with Europe deliveries in spring 2026 and U.S. sales in summer 2026.
This vehicle defines BMW’s next stage of electrification: higher efficiency, faster charging, more range, and an all-digital driving experience.
Key Performance and Range Data
- Power: 345 kW (469 hp)
- Torque: 645 Nm (475 lb-ft)
- 0–62 mph (0–100 km/h): 4.9 seconds
- Top speed: 130 mph (210 km/h)
- Battery (usable): 108.7 kWh
- Range (WLTP): 421–500 miles (679–805 km)
- Efficiency: 15.1–17.9 kWh/100 km
- Charging (DC): 10–80% in 21 minutes at 400 kW
- Range added in 10 minutes (DC): up to 231 miles
Charging: Fast, Flexible, Bidirectional
The 400 kW DC charging rate places the iX3 at the top of its class. At peak output, drivers add more than 200 miles in under ten minutes.
BMW also introduces bidirectional charging:
- Vehicle-to-Load (V2L): power electronics support external devices.
- Vehicle-to-Home (V2H): store and use solar power.
- Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G): sell electricity back to the grid.
AC charging comes standard at 11 kW, with an optional 22 kW upgrade.
Neue Klasse Battery and Drive Tech
BMW debuts its sixth-generation eDrive system with cylindrical lithium-ion cells. Compared to Gen5, the Gen6 system improves:
- Energy density: +20%
- Charging speed: +30%
- Manufacturing cost: -20%
- Weight: -10%
The rear axle motor uses a synchronous design for efficiency, while the front axle motor uses an asynchronous layout for cost and compactness. Together, they enable precise torque control across both axles.
Software Architecture: Four "Superbrains"
The iX3’s new electronics backbone runs on four high-performance computers. Each controls a domain:
- Driving dynamics (Heart of Joy)
- Automated driving
- Infotainment and user experience
- Basic and comfort functions
Processing power is up to 20 times higher than older BMW models, allowing continuous over-the-air software updates and AI integration.
Driving Dynamics: "Heart of Joy"
BMW says its Heart of Joy controller recalculates traction, braking, and steering ten times faster than previous systems.
Key points:
- 98% of everyday braking uses energy recuperation, not friction brakes.
- "Soft Stop" delivers smoother deceleration at traffic lights.
- Integrated management boosts efficiency and control.
- Hill descent, trailer stability, and torque distribution are standard.
Design: Clean, Minimal, Recognizably BMW
The iX3 launches BMW’s new design language:
- Proportions: Length 4,782 mm, Width 1,895 mm, Height 1,635 mm, Wheelbase 2,897 mm.
- Aerodynamics: Cd of 0.24, with flush glass and hidden door handles.
- Front: Vertical kidney grilles, new horizontal light signature, optional Iconic Glow package.
- Rear: L-shaped taillights with layered depth.
- Cargo: 520 liters standard, 1,750 liters max, plus 58 liters under the hood.
- Towing: 2,000 kg braked capacity.
Interior: Digital-First, Space-Efficient
- BMW Panoramic iDrive with Operating System X:
- Panoramic Vision projects info across the windshield.
- 17.9-inch central display in “free-cut” design.
- Optional 3D Head-Up Display.
- Shy-tech multifunction steering wheel with haptic controls.
- Interior materials: Econeer recycled textiles standard, Veganza and M PerformTex options, Merino leather in BMW Individual trims.
- Comfort:
- Five spacious seats with increased rear legroom.
- Rear sofa-style bench.
- Panoramic roof with solar-filter glass.
- Heated and power-adjustable front seats standard.
Assisted Driving and Safety
The automated driving “superbrain” enables new functions:
- Motorway Assistant allows extended hands-off driving.
- City Assistant includes traffic light recognition.
- Park Assist with AI-supported parking.
- Symbiotic Drive integrates driver inputs with AI for smoother transitions.
Standard safety includes multiple airbags, stability control, trailer stability assist, and all-speed traction systems.
