A Beginner's Guide to Getting Started on Two Wheels

A Beginner's Guide to Getting Started on Two Wheels

In the past decade, cycling has experienced a surge in popularity, with bicycle sales soaring by 40 percent between 2019 and 2020. As more people seek sustainable and health-conscious transportation options, one mode of cycling has emerged as a preferred choice for beginners: electric bikes or e-bikes.

There’s no denying the appeal of electric bikes, whose sales grew by 240 percent between 2020 and 2021. They provide all the benefits of a regular bicycle, like exercise and mobility, with the added advantage of an electric motor to assist you on steep inclines, long commutes or when carrying heavy loads. With their unique blend of convenience and exhilaration, e-bikes have captivated riders and transformed how they experience the open road.

Whether you’re a novice cyclist or a seasoned rider looking for a new adventure, understanding the basics of e-bike types, components, operation and maintenance can help you on your e-bike journey so you can discover the incredible joys of battery-powered pedaling.

Choosing the Right E-Bike

Your perfect e-bike selection will be influenced by comfort, battery range, motor power and budget. There are various types of e-bikes available, including:

● Road bikes: Road bikes are designed for efficiency and speed on paved surfaces, making them ideal for urban commuting and long-distance rides. They have lightweight frames and narrow tires for a smooth and swift journey.

● Mountain bikes: Mountain bikes feature rugged frames and suspension systems for shock absorption and traction on challenging terrain. With wider and knobby tires, they excel in conquering trails and uneven surfaces.

● Hybrid bikes: Combining elements of road and mountain bikes, hybrids are versatile for urban commuting and light off-road riding. With slightly wider tires and an upright riding position, they offer increased comfort and efficiency on different surfaces.

● City bikes: Prioritizing comfort and practicality, city bikes are perfect for daily commutes and leisurely urban rides. With step-through frames, relaxed geometry and a broader saddle, they provide a comfortable and upright riding position.

Familiarize Yourself with the Bike’s Features

Understanding the key features of your electric bike systems is crucial for optimizing your riding experience and getting the most out of your bike’s features. The essential components of an e-bike include:

● Motor: The motor provides pedal-assist power, amplifies your pedaling efforts and gives an extra boost while riding. They can be located in various positions on the bike, including front hub, rear hub and mid-drive. The motor position can impact the bike’s performance and handling. For a beginner, a mid-drive motor offers even weight distribution for a more natural-feeling ride.

● Battery: The battery stores the electric energy required to operate the motor and determines the range of your rides. The higher the battery’s wattage, the more power it will deliver to the motor. This translates to faster acceleration, easier hill climbs and better performance for heavy-duty hauling.

● Control panel: The control panel allows you to adjust settings such as power assistance levels and monitor battery life. It is usually located in the center of the handlebars for improved visibility while riding.

● Gears: Gears enable you to adjust the bike’s speed and optimize pedaling efficiency, especially when encountering different terrains. There are two gear types: derailleur gears and hub gears.

Derailleur gears are similar to those on manual bikes and offer a wider range of gear changing options. Hub gears are fully encased in the bike’s rear hub, which means they are protected from the elements, so the components last longer; however, they are less energy efficient and require a specialist for repairs.

Learning the Basics of Riding

Depending on their purpose, e-bike makes and models are ridden differently, so consult your user manual before beginning your first ride. However, to become proficient in riding an e-bike, it’s important to learn the basics:

● Mounting and dismounting: Begin by standing on the side of the e-bike. Position your pedals at 45° angle to allow for adequate leverage when starting. Swing your leg over the back tire and saddle and position yourself comfortably on the seat.

● Starting and stopping: Disengage the kickstand. Gradually apply pressure to the pedals to start moving; the pedal assist should automatically kick in as the sensors on the bike detect movement. When you want to stop, squeeze the brakes evenly and gradually for a controlled stop.

● Adjusting gears: Familiarize yourself with the gears on your e-bike; the shifter should be located on the right handlebar. Only click the gear shifter while pedaling. The chain won’t move along the cog if you change gears while stationary. Shift to lower gears when starting your ride or climbing hills and higher gears for flat or downhill sections.

● Maintaining balance: Keep your body centered on the bike and distribute your weight evenly. Engage your core muscles to maintain balance and control.

● Practice in a safe area: Find an empty parking lot or quiet residential street to practice your riding skills. Begin with basic maneuvers and gradually increase the difficulty as you gain confidence.

Mastering the skill of e-bike riding requires consistent practice and a patient approach. Start with short rides and gradually increase the distance and difficulty level as you become more comfortable and confident. Every successful ride, no matter how short or simple, is a step closer to becoming a proficient e-bike rider.

Safety Measures

Although e-bikes are a safe, sustainable mode of transport, sharing the road with larger, faster vehicles can be intimidating for new riders. Ensure a safer riding experience by following these essential safety measures:

● Wear a helmet: Always wear a properly fitted helmet, such as the Abus Hyban 2.0, to reduce the risk of head injuries.

● Follow traffic laws: Obey speed limits, stop at lights and signs and yield to pedestrians. Respect traffic rules for everyone’s safety.

● Signal and stay visible: Use hand signals to indicate turns and stops. Wear reflective gear and equip your e-bike with tail lights for better visibility, especially in low-light conditions.

● Be mindful of your surroundings: Stay alert and aware of your surroundings while riding. Scan the road ahead, anticipate potential hazards and be prepared to react. Avoid distractions like using your phone or wearing headphones that may impair your awareness.

Basic Bike Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and longevity of your electric bike, allowing you to enjoy seamless rides for years, especially if you use a used electric bike. Key maintenance tasks include checking tire pressure and inflation, lubricating the chain, inspecting brakes and maintaining the battery.

Regularly monitor and adjust tire pressure to ensure a smooth and efficient ride. The ideal tire pressure is between 30 and 60 PSI, depending on the type of bike tire. Keep the chain properly lubricated to reduce friction and enhance shifting performance. Inspect and test the brakes to ensure they are in good working condition.

Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for battery maintenance, including proper charging and storage practices. Consider investing in a basic bike maintenance toolkit that includes essential tools such as a tire pump, chain lubricant and Allen wrenches.
