Volkswagen has officially started the production of its all-electric ID.7 sedan at its Emden plant in Germany. The ID.7 electric sedan is the latest addition to the ID family of electric vehicles, which includes the Volkswagen ID.3 hatchback, the Volkswagen ID.4 SUV, and the upcoming Volkswagen ID.Buzz van. The Volkswagen ID.7 is expected to be a premium and spacious electric sedan that could rival the likes of the Tesla Model 3 and Model S and other electric sedans from Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz.
What is the ID.7?
The ID.7 is based on the ID.Aero concept that Volkswagen unveiled in 2019 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The concept was designed to be as aerodynamic as possible, with a sleek and futuristic shape that resembles a coupe more than a sedan. The production version of the ID.7 is expected to retain most of the design elements of the concept, such as the slim LED headlights and taillights, the large 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and the head-up display that can project navigation instructions and other information on the windshield.
The Volkswagen ID.7 will also feature a liftback design, similar to the Volkswagen Arteon, which means that it will have a large trunk opening that allows for easy access to the cargo space. The ID.7 will offer a generous amount of interior space, thanks to its long wheelbase and flat floor that houses the battery pack. Volkswagen claims that the ID.7 will have more room than a conventional sedan of its size and will be comparable to a luxury sedan in terms of comfort and quality.
What are the specs of the ID.7?
The Volkswagen ID.7 will be powered by a 77 kWh battery pack, providing an estimated range of 300 miles on a single charge. The battery pack will support fast charging up to 125 kW, which means it can be recharged from 5% to 80% in about 30 minutes at a compatible charging station.
The ID.7 will initially be available with a single electric motor to drive the rear wheels and deliver 282 horsepower. According to Volkswagen, this configuration will allow the ID.7 to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 5 seconds. Later, Volkswagen will introduce a dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant with more power and better performance.
The Volkswagen ID.7 will also come with various driving modes, such as Comfort, Sport, Eco, and Individual, that will adjust the suspension, steering, throttle response, and regenerative braking according to the driver’s preference. The ID.7 will also feature an adaptive cruise control system that can automatically adjust the speed and distance to the traffic ahead and a lane-keeping assist system that can steer the car within its lane.
When will the ID.7 be available?
The production of the ID.7 at the Emden plant (Germany) marks a significant milestone for Volkswagen, as it is part of its ambitious plan to electrify its entire lineup by 2030. The Emden plant has been converted from producing internal combustion engine vehicles to producing electric vehicles, with an investment of over $1 billion. The plant can produce up to 300,000 electric vehicles per year and will also produce other models from the ID family in the future.
The ID.7 is expected to go on sale in Europe in the summer of 2023, with a starting price of around $55,000. The US launch date and pricing have not yet been announced, but the ID.7 will likely arrive in America in late 2023 or early 2024.
The ID.7 is one of the most anticipated electric vehicles from Volkswagen, as it aims to offer a compelling alternative to Tesla and other premium electric sedans in the market. With its sleek design, spacious interior, long-range, fast charging, and advanced technology, the ID.7 could be a game-changer for Volkswagen and the electric vehicle industry.
