Polestar, the Swedish electric performance car brand, has announced the start of production for its latest model, the Polestar 4. The SUV coupe is the fourth vehicle in the company’s lineup, following the Polestar 1 hybrid coupe, the Polestar 2 fastback sedan, and the Polestar 3 electric SUV. The Polestar 4 is expected to reach its first customers before the end of 2023.

What makes the Polestar 4 unique?

The Polestar 4 is a sleek and sporty SUV coupe with a sloping roofline, a distinctive taillight design, and 22-inch alloy wheels. But the most striking feature of the Polestar 4 is the absence of a rear window. Instead, the vehicle relies on a digital rearview mirror and a camera system to provide visibility for the driver. Polestar says this design choice allows for more rear passenger space and an immersive experience.

The Polestar 4 also boasts impressive performance and range, thanks to its electric powertrain and battery pack. The vehicle will be available with two options: a single-motor rear-wheel-drive configuration with 272 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque or a dual-motor all-wheel-drive configuration with 544 horsepower and 506 lb-ft of torque. According to Polestar, the latter can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 3.8 seconds.

The Polestar 4 will have a large 94 kWh battery pack that can provide over 300 miles of driving range for the single-motor version and slightly less for the dual-motor version. The battery can be charged at up to 200 kW on a DC fast charger, although Polestar has not revealed the estimated charging times yet.

What are the features and options of the Polestar 4?

The Polestar 4 will come with a range of features and options to enhance the comfort, convenience, and safety of the driver and passengers. Some of the standard features include:

  • A 15.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Google services and apps
  • A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster
  • A Harman Kardon premium sound system
  • A panoramic glass roof
  • An adaptive suspension system (for the dual-motor version)
  • A vegan interior with recycled materials
  • A suite of advanced driver assistance systems, such as adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert

Some of the optional features include:

  • A performance package with Brembo brakes, Öhlins dampers, and 20-inch forged wheels
  • A leather interior with ventilated seats and a heated steering wheel
  • A tow bar with a 3,300-lb towing capacity
  • A roof box or a bike rack

How much does the Polestar 4 cost?

Polestar says the Polestar 4 will start at $60,000 for the single-motor version and will likely cost more for the dual-motor version. The exact pricing and availability for different markets will be announced later. The Polestar 4 will be sold online through the company’s website and physical Polestar Spaces, where customers can see and test drive the vehicles.

How does the Polestar 4 compare to its competitors?

The Polestar 4 will compete with other electric SUV coupes, such as the Audi Q4 Sportback E-tron, the Tesla Model Y, and the Mercedes-Benz EQC. Here is a comparison table of some of their key specifications:

Model Price Power Torque 0-60 mph Range Battery Charging
Polestar 4 (single-motor) $60,000 est. 272 hp 273 lb-ft N/A 300+ miles 94 kWh 200 kW
Polestar 4 (dual-motor) N/A 544 hp 506 lb-ft 3.8 sec N/A 94 kWh 200 kW
Audi Q4 Sportback E-tron $45,000 est. 201 hp 228 lb-ft 9.0 sec 250 miles 77 kWh 125 kW
Tesla Model Y $53,990 384 hp 376 lb-ft 4.8 sec 326 miles 75 kWh 250 kW
Mercedes-Benz EQC $67,900 402 hp 561 lb-ft 4.8 sec 220 miles 80 kWh 110 kW

As the table shows, the Polestar 4 has the advantage of having the largest battery pack, the fastest charging speed, and the most powerful dual-motor option. However, it also has the highest starting price and the lowest rear visibility due to the lack of a rear window. The Audi Q4 Sportback E-tron is the most affordable option, the least powerful, and the slowest. The Tesla Model Y offers the best balance of performance, range, and price but has the most minimalist interior and controversial design. The Mercedes-Benz EQC is the most luxurious and refined option but also the most expensive and the least efficient, just like the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV.

What is the verdict on the Polestar 4?

The Polestar 4 is a bold and innovative SUV coupe with a unique design, a spacious interior, and a powerful electric powertrain. It is a vehicle that aims to appeal to customers who value performance, style, and sustainability. However, it also comes with some drawbacks, such as the high price, the limited rear visibility, and the unknown reliability and service network. The Polestar 4 is a vehicle that stands out, but also requires some compromises.
