It was about time. Volkswagen presents the ID. 4 GTX, the first electric car with a sports car vibe from the German manufacturer, which paves the way for future performance models.

With the Golf GTI being one of the most desired cars in the Volkswagen range, it was strange not to find a sports version in the ID family. Finally, the ID.4 electric SUV becomes Volkswagen ID. 4 GTX sports SUV and it is the beginning of a new family of products. The GTX abbreviation identifies the flagship sports variant within the ID range, it is synonymous with a product name in its own right. The GT letters have long been a reminder of driving pleasure, while the letter X now represents the link with the mobility of the future: eco-compatibility and sportiness are not mutually exclusive, but complement each other in harmony.

The new Volkswagen ID.4 GTX has two electric motors, mounted respectively on the rear and front axles, together the electric motors develop a maximum power of 220 kW (299 hp). The ID.4 GTX SUV will debut on European markets in summer 2021. The starting price for ID.4 GTX is 50,000 euros

The two electric motors are: a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PSM) with an output of 150 kW (204 hp) which operates on the rear axle and an asynchronous motor (ASM) mounted on the front axle. The synergic operation of these two electric motors allows the ID.4 GTX to have a completely new four-wheel-drive architecture. The new Volkswagen ID.4 GTX can accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 6.2 seconds and the top speed is electronically limited at 180 km / h.

The management of the four-wheel-drive system applied on the ID.4 GTX is based on an intelligent control system that decides how to divide the available torque between the two electric motors to always obtain the maximum in terms of efficiency, dynamics and driving stability. The recovery system is a factor of fundamental importance for efficient driving. If the driver so desires, the Eco assistant system monitors the speed and recovers energy as soon as the car approaches an area where speed needs to be reduced. For this purpose, it uses, among other things, topographic and navigation data. At the front, the ID.4 GTX is equipped with disc brakes, while the rear wheels are fitted with particularly wear-resistant and low-maintenance drum brakes.

The new Volkswagen ID.4 GTX electric SUV has a lithium-ion battery, positioned under the passenger compartment between the two axles, that lowers the car's centre of gravity, allowing for a well-balanced distribution of the load. Thanks to its powerful traction and a ground clearance of 17 centimetres, this Volkswagen electric SUV can tackle even light off-road routes with ease. The battery of the ID.4 GTX has a net energy capacity of 77 kWh and it offers a realistic range of up to 480 km (WLTP). The battery can be charged to a maximum of 125 kW of power, which means that using a fast charger will take less than an hour to complete a full charge. Volkswagen guarantees the battery until has at least 70% of its original capacity after 8 years or 160,000 km. 

The trunk of the ID.4 GTX claims a volume of 543 litres, which increases to 1,575 litres. Thanks to the tow hook (available on request), this electric SUV can tow trailers weighing up to 1,200 kilograms. On request, the electric Easy Open & Close tailgate is also available. The ID.4 GTX is offered as standard with 20-inch rims.

The interior is characterized by a new chromatic concept, which underlines the sporty character of the ID.4 GTX in the name of elegance and modernity, with a predominance of dark colours. The Infotainment Plus package includes the head-up display with augmented reality, which blends its three-dimensional views with the real environment.

Last year the Volkswagen Group more than tripled the sales of its fully electric cars and by 2025 it aims to conquer the leadership on the world market in electric mobility. Over the next five years, investments of around 46 billion euros are planned on electromobility and hybridization. By 2030 the percentage of electric vehicles in Europe produced by Volkswagen is expected to increase to 60%.
