Renault 5 E-Tech Electric Review: Efficiency, Style, and Advanced Technology

Renault 5 E-Tech Electric Review: Efficiency, Style, and Advanced Technology

The Renault 5 E-Tech Electric marks the exciting return of a legendary model, blending nostalgia with modern electric technology. Originally inspired by an orange mock-up and a design nearly set in stone, Renault embarked on an ambitious journey to bring the Renault 5 back to life—this time as an electric vehicle. With a tight three-year development window, significantly shorter than the usual four years, Renault faced a major industrial challenge, all while undergoing a corporate transformation under the Renaulution plan.

Now, the Renault 5 E-Tech steps into the spotlight as a compact electric vehicle packed with modern features. It stands out not only as a stylish nod to the past but also as a game-changing urban car that supports Europe’s shift towards electric mobility.

Retro Design Meets Cutting-Edge Electric Power

The design of the Renault 5 E-Tech Electric is one of its most striking features. It captures the iconic cues of the original Renault 5, yet adds a modern twist with customization options that appeal to both long-time fans and a new generation of drivers. Beneath the eye-catching exterior lies Renault’s new AmpR Small platform, built specifically for small electric vehicles.

This design, coupled with the platform, ensures that the Renault 5 E-Tech Electric provides a thrilling driving experience. It handles with the agility expected of a small, front-wheel-drive EV, while offering smooth, quiet acceleration thanks to the instant torque of the electric motor. These characteristics make it an ideal vehicle for busy city streets, where maneuverability and driving ease are paramount.

Driving Comfort and Modern Technology

Comfort and ease of use are at the core of the Renault 5 E-Tech Electric’s appeal. The car is packed with features designed to enhance the driving experience, including:

  • OpenR Link system with Google built-in for a seamless infotainment experience
  • V2G (vehicle-to-grid) technology that allows the car to return energy to the grid
  • Plug & Charge functionality for simpler charging
  • Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) for increased safety

The car’s digital cockpit and intuitive controls make it easy for drivers of all levels to feel at home behind the wheel. The inclusion of Google’s connected services also ensures that the vehicle remains digitally advanced, providing everything from navigation to hands-free controls.

An Affordable and Sustainable Electric Car

Priced at approximately $26,000, the Renault 5 E-Tech Electric positions itself as a competitively priced electric vehicle within the European market. While it’s affordable, Renault has ensured that the car’s sustainability credentials are equally impressive. Production takes place at Renault’s ElectriCity hub in northern France, with an ecosystem of suppliers within a 300 km radius. This focus on local manufacturing helps reduce the vehicle’s carbon footprint while supporting the regional economy.

The car is produced using recycled materials, with an overall recyclability rate of 88.6%. Additionally, 19.4% of its materials are recycled, while 26.4% come from circular economy processes, setting new standards for sustainability in its category. Renault’s commitment to sustainability extends to its production goals, with the ElectriCity hub aiming to achieve carbon neutrality by 2025.

Performance on the Road: Pop Icon Reborn

The Renault 5 E-Tech Electric isn’t just about saving money and energy; it’s also about fun. The car delivers an exhilarating driving experience, uncommon for a vehicle in its segment. Its low center of gravity, due to the battery placement, and precise steering provide excellent handling on the road. This car is as engaging to drive as it is easy to park, making it perfect for urban environments.

Renault’s AmpR Small platform enables the Renault 5 to excel in performance while still offering an efficient and practical driving range of about 250 miles (400 kilometers) on a single charge. With fast-charging capabilities that allow 80% battery replenishment in just 30 minutes, drivers can spend more time on the road and less time charging.

Built for the Future in France

As the Renault 5 E-Tech Electric enters production, its "Made in France" status is central to Renault’s approach. By using local circuits and keeping production within the country, Renault ensures the highest levels of quality control and sustainability. Production happens at the Manufacture de Douai, one of the original production sites of the classic Renault 5, and other key components such as the electric motor will be built at the Cléon plant in Normandy.

This French production also benefits from Renault’s Industrial Metaverse, a cutting-edge system that connects millions of data points to optimize production in real time. With this technology, Renault aims to reduce production time to just nine hours per vehicle, while cutting both costs and the carbon footprint of its manufacturing processes.
