The new Toyota Proace CITY Electric marks a significant expansion of the Toyota Professional product range in electrified light vans and passenger cars. This electric van makes Toyota a strong player in the segment of compact vans in Europe.
The new electric van line will be launched in the fourth quarter of 2021, and customers will have access to a standard van (4.4 m), a long van (4.75 m) and a 7-seater passenger van (4.75 m). These models together with the recently launched Toyota Proace Electric and Proace Verso Electric, strengthen Toyota's position in the electrification race.
All Toyota Proace CITY Electric models have a front-wheel electric motor that produces 136 hp / 100 kW. The driveline also incorporates a lithium-ion battery and a 7.4 kW onboard charger. The lithium-ion battery is located under the cargo floor and does not take up unnecessary loading space. The battery has a capacity of 50 kWh which allows for a range of up to 280 km (WLTP) and a top speed of 135 km / h. Proace CITY Electric's lithium-ion battery uses a glycol water cooling system, which helps ensure charging time, efficiency and optimal battery performance in a wide temperature range from -40 to + 55˚C.
The introduction of battery electric power must not be at the expense of the practical benefits of Proace CITY Electric. The load capacity extends to 4.4m3 on models with the Smart Cargo system. The maximum payload is up to 800 kg for standard length (L1) and up to 750 kg for the long version (L2); both vans can pull a trailer that weighs up to 750 kg.
Both the Toyota Proace CITY Electric van and the Verso models benefit from a comprehensive list of safety equipment with Toyota Safety Sense: collision protection, intelligent speed limiter, fatigue warning, trailer stability control, high beam assistant, blind-spot warning, advanced grip control and downhill assist control. An electronic parking brake is standard equipment. Other equipment available: front and rear parking sensors, reversing camera and a 180-degree camera system.
The new Toyota Proace CITY Electric has great potential to help Toyota achieve its objective of a mix of 10% zero emissions in Europe by 2025. The new model will be introduced in Europe from the fourth quarter of 2021. The potential for success is undeniable, as the electric car market for compact electric vans has doubled since 2017 to 20,000 units, and the demand is growing four times faster than for medium-sized electric vans.
