Mercedes-Benz has taken a major step towards creating a sustainable future by announcing its new battery recycling factory in Kuppenheim, Germany. The symbolic foundation stone for the factory was laid in early March, marking the beginning of an innovative technological approach that will incorporate valuable raw materials into new Mercedes-EQ vehicles.
With a recycling rate of more than 96 percent, the battery recycling factory in Kuppenheim is set to become a symbolic "mine of tomorrow." The factory will cover all steps from dismantling to the module level, shredding and drying to processing the material flows in battery quality. This innovative approach to battery recycling is currently unique in Europe and enables a real circular economy of battery materials.
Mercedes-Benz is investing a double-digit million amount in the construction of the system, which will be operated with a CO2-neutral balance sheet and is being funded as part of a scientific research project by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection. This partnership demonstrates the German government's commitment to creating a sustainable future and reducing CO2 emissions.
Mercedes-Benz is working in partnership with technology partner Primobius to ensure that the process chain of battery recycling is fully considered. This includes the development of logistics concepts and sustainable recycling of valuable raw materials to reintegrate recycled materials into the production of new batteries.
The pilot plant will have an annual capacity of 2500 tons, with recovered materials being returned to the material cycle and used to produce more than 50,000 battery modules for new electric cars from Mercedes-Benz. The knowledge gained from the pilot factory will be used to scale up production volumes in the medium to long term.
Jörg Burzer, Board Member for Production at Mercedes-Benz, said, "This cornerstone symbolizes the decisive step towards closing the materials cycle for batteries from Mercedes-Benz. The innovative technological approach enables us to incorporate the valuable raw materials into new Mercedes-EQ vehicles."
