BMW plans to develop next-generation electric drives together with British carmaker Jaguar Land Rover. Companies are hoping to bring new electric vehicles to market faster.
Both top-of-the-line manufacturers have recently posted losses in the car business and have come under pressure from several angles. In addition, there are billions of euros in provisions for imminent antitrust penalties by the EU Commission.
A joint team of experts from BMW and Jaguar Land Rover will further develop the fifth-generation power units in Munich. The electric engines are then built separately at the respective locations.
“The automotive industry is undergoing a steep transformation. We see collaboration as a key for success, also in the field of electrification,” said Klaus Fröhlich, BMW’s development manager in a statement to the press.
“With Jaguar Land Rover, we found a partner whose requirements for the future generation of electric drive units significantly match ours.
“Together, we have the opportunity to cater more effectively for customer needs by shortening development time and bringing vehicles and state-of-the-art technologies more rapidly to market.”
