Ford F-150 Lightning Switchgear: A Beast of an Electric Truck

Ford F-150 Lightning Switchgear

Ford has unveiled a new concept vehicle that showcases the potential of its F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck. The Switchgear performance demonstrator is a modified version of the F-150 Lightning that features a custom off-road suspension, a removable roof and doors, and a powerful electric drivetrain. The Switchgear is designed to show how the Ford F-150 Lightning can be adapted for different uses and environments, from urban commuting to extreme off-roading.

What is the Switchgear?

The Switchgear is not a production vehicle but a one-off prototype that Ford created to demonstrate the versatility and capability of the F-150 Lightning. The Switchgear is based on the F-150 Lightning Platinum trim level, which is the most luxurious and expensive option in the F-150 Lightning lineup. The Switchgear has a range of 300 miles on a single charge and a peak power output of 563 horsepower and 775 pound-feet of torque. The Switchgear can also tow up to 10,000 pounds and carry up to 2,000 pounds in its bed.

The Switchgear has several modifications that make it more suitable for off-road adventures. The most noticeable changes are the removal of the roof and doors, which give the Switchgear a more open-air feel and improve visibility. The Switchgear also has a custom suspension system that raises the ground clearance by 6.7 inches and adds Fox shocks, 37-inch tires, and skid plates. The Switchgear also has a front winch, a rear-mounted spare tire, and a roll cage for added safety and utility.

The Switchgear also showcases some of the unique features of the F-150 Lightning that make it different from other electric vehicles. The Switchgear has a frunk or a front trunk, that can store up to 400 liters of cargo and has a power outlet that can supply up to 2.4 kilowatts of electricity. The Switchgear also has a power export feature that allows it to share its battery power with other devices or vehicles, such as a camper or a generator. The Switchgear can also use its intelligent range feature to adjust its driving range based on factors such as payload, weather, and terrain.

Why did Ford create the Switchgear?

Ford created the Switchgear to showcase the potential of the F-150 Lightning as a platform for customization and innovation. The Switchgear is part of Ford’s Switchback program, which is a series of concept vehicles that explore different ways to use the F-150 Lightning’s electric architecture and features. The Switchback program aims to inspire customers, dealers, and aftermarket companies to create their own versions of the F-150 Lightning that suit their needs and preferences.

Ford also created the Switchgear to demonstrate its commitment to electrification and sustainability. The F-150 Lightning is Ford’s first all-electric pickup truck, and one of the most anticipated vehicles in the electric vehicle market. The new Ford F-150 Lightning is expected to go on sale in the spring of 2024, starting at $39,974. The F-150 Lightning is part of Ford’s plan to invest $30 billion in electrification by 2025 and offer electric versions of its most popular models, such as the Ford Mustang, the Ford Transit, and the Ford Bronco.

How does the Switchgear compare to other electric trucks?

The Switchgear is not a direct competitor to other electric trucks since it is not a production vehicle. However, the Switchgear highlights some of electric trucks' general advantages and challenges. Electric trucks offer benefits such as:

  • Zero emissions: Electric trucks do not produce any tailpipe emissions, reducing their environmental impact and operating costs.
  • Instant torque: Electric trucks have instant and powerful torque, which improves their acceleration, performance, and towing capacity.
  • Low maintenance: Electric trucks have fewer moving parts than conventional trucks, reducing maintenance needs and costs.
  • Smart features: Electric trucks have advanced features such as over-the-air updates, remote diagnostics, and intelligent range estimation, which enhance their convenience and functionality.

Electric trucks also face some challenges, such as:

  • High price: Electric trucks are more expensive than conventional trucks due to the high cost of batteries and other components. Electric trucks also require more infrastructure and incentives to support their adoption and use.
  • Limited range: Electric trucks have limited range compared to conventional trucks, especially when towing or carrying heavy loads. Electric trucks also need more time and availability to recharge their batteries.
  • Weight and size: Electric trucks are heavier and larger than conventional trucks due to their batteries' and other components' size and weight. Electric trucks also have less space and flexibility for customization and modification.

The Switchgear is an example of how Ford is trying to overcome some of these challenges and leverage some of these benefits with the F-150 Lightning. The Switchgear shows that the F-150 Lightning can offer various options and features that appeal to different types of customers and use cases, from urban to rural, from luxury to adventure. The Switchgear also shows that the F-150 Lightning can retain the core attributes and values of the F-150 brand, such as reliability, durability, and capability. The Switchgear is a glimpse into the future of electric trucks and a testament to Ford’s vision and innovation.
