The Hungarian production unit of Audi AG opened a new logistics centre in Gyёr on 7 October 2020. It houses the largest rooftop solar power plant in Europe.
Alfons Dintner, CEO of Audi Hungaria, called the project a symbol of the company's commitment to sustainable development. A solar power plant of such magnitude is a functional, efficient system.
The largest rooftop solar power plant in Europe is expected to generate 9.5-gigawatt-hours per year. This amount of electricity is enough to fully power 3800 average households. For contrast: a fossil fuel power plant of the same capacity emits 4,900 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere per year.
The photovoltaic system (PV system) roof has an area of 22.4 football fields, holds 36,400 solar cells and has a power capacity of 12 megawatts (MW).
In 2018, Audi Hungaria became the second division of Audi AG after Audi Brussels to achieve carbon neutrality. And since 2020, all the energy used by the factory comes exclusively from renewable sources.
